Superb compliment to the Autobiography of Yogi

This is an inspiring read, essentially picking up where Paramhansa Yogananda's own autobiography left-off and continuing teachings from the early part of the twentieth century right up until today, at the dawn of the twenty first.
It updates considerably its predecessor, "The Path", revising the old text and bring us up to date.
The New Path (TNP) presents a fuller, more detailed picture of what knowing Yogananda personally was like and sets his world mission in its fullest, non sectarian context, not about forming this group or that, rather transforming man's connection with God - direct personal experience of the truth, not dogmatic or uncritical belief in mere written scripture or socially-oriented attendance at religious ceremonies.
TNP is much more complete than many existing first person accounts, such as "Treasures Against Time", "The Flawless Mirror", "Paramhansa Yoganda Trilogy" and "Collection of Four Kriya Yuga Gurus", given Swami Kriyananda's 60+ years of reflection on the essence of Yogananda's teachings.
Kriyananda is a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda and under him, the head of the monastics, Vice President and Board Member of Self Realization Fellowship (SRF) and later founder of Ananda.
It would be a tragedy for any student to miss out on reading this great work, especially if that decision were based on one-sided knowledge of his split and later legal disputes both directly and later via proxies between SRF and Ananda.

The New Path-2009 edition

This is the best book available that describes the last few years of Paramhansa Yogananda's life. Every path attracts its quota of big egos, true believers, dogmatists, and holier than thou types and in Yogananda's wake there are certainly many of these. Kriyananda is willing to discuss all this and much more with an honesty that does him credit. He is able to lay aside his personal opinions and give an honest critique of events and personalities instead of seeing things only in a black and white perspective. This is one mans story of his search for truth, how he found Yogananda, and what his experiences with the Master were like. Again, he does not exaggerate and is willing to deal with sensitive issues honestly and fairly. I think he shows clearly that no one is either completely right or completely wrong and that we all see thru our own tinted spectacles. Overall, a great documentation of Yogananda's life and mission.

Emergence

I found "The Path" at a pavement bookseller in an obscure corner of Delhi, India, somewhere around 1990. Paramahamsa Yogananda was not so well known in India at that time, at least, not to my knowledge. A friend had presented me with a copy of "Autobiography of a Yogi" some years ago. I remember being intrigued by the title of the book, wondering if it had anything to do with the Paramahamsa. I bought the book to find out for myself.
Reading "The Path" was a source of great comfort to me. At the time, I was emerging from a particularly long period of what I call "The Dark Night of the Soul". Kriyananda's account of the anguish he underwent at the time of his expulsion from the organization to which he had given his life, touched me to the core. I recognized well, the sense of the futility of life, the feeling of being forsaken by both God and guru. Reading about his suffering helped me realize that I was not alone in the dungeon of Giant Despair; it also helped me find courage to face my own problems with greater acceptance and fortitude.
I mention this background because "The New Path" cannot avoid comparison with the older version of the same. Clearly, it is exceptionally well written, given Kriyananda's prolific output over the years. Most of those who have read "The Path" will find basically the same energy in "The New Path". but there is an added depth and dimension to the later work.
That dimension derives its wellspring from the persona of the Kriyananda of today. The Kriyananda that has been forged over the decades of financial struggle, over long drawn out lawsuits and other vicissitudes, too numerous to mention. The same events mentioned in "The Path" are presented in the same chronological order, but this time they are being experienced by the new Kriyananda of today, the one who can stand aside and observe himself playing his part in the game of Life. This new Kriyananda can see his boyhood from another angle, put in perspective, his stint as a questioning young man hungry for real answers and his blossoming as a devoted disciple to his enlightened guru. It is this perspective that he brings to "The New Path".
Inevitably "The New Path" contains additional material on his friends and family that have a bearing on the formation of the Kriynanda of today. The account of his sojourn with the Paramahamsa is especially worth reading, when seen in the light of Kriyananda's unflinching love and respect for his guru, a trait that has been his life's magnetic compass. Some additional material in this book, have to do with later events, one of them being a chapter on the writing of the Bhagavad Gita that came out in 2005. A second addition concerns a past lifetime when Kriyananda was born as Yogananda's son, Henry, who was to become King Henry I of England. Yogananda was born as William the Conqueror in that lifetime.
What is missing in this book is the agony that had percolated to the surface and found expression in the older book. As I see it, "The New Path" reflects in some way the emergence of the butterfly from the cocoon of human mediocrity. Having weathered one obstacle after another and surmounted them all, Kriyananda imparts to this book, a sense of victory. The bitterness that seeped through in the earlier book is absent.
In conclusion, if you wish to know just what it was like to be near Paramahamsa Yogananda, read this book. You will.
