Friendship, Love and Loyalty - not showing off and making an impression

I am delighted to add this book to my daughters' library. It's a sweet, kind, tender book about a little girl and her difficult decision to bring a tried & true, very loved doll to a party, even though she has several others which would be sure to impress her friends and win her a prize. This book has no sassy behavior, no inappropriate words, just a gentle story about love and loyalty and being a good, kind friend. It is slightly longer and slower moving than your average picture book, and the pictures are black & white with only a magenta fill, but my three girls (ages 8, 4 & 2) were absolutely captivated and delighted by the story. In this world of Facebook and the Kardashians, I'm thrilled to give my girls a book that teaches the value of loyalty and friendship over showing off and impressing others.

This was my favorite book as a child. I couldn't quite remember the title, but a librarian friend found it for me. I was so thrilled to have it once again. An endearing story your little girl will read again and again.

A Best-Loved Book!

Does anyone else remember this book from when they were growing up? As soon as I saw this one, it brought back memories! I loved the sweet story back then and was so happy to find it for my own daughter. It is a great read aloud and a perfect starting point for conversations about making decisions, feeling comfortable with the consequences of our choices and disregarding the reactions of friends.

The whole story, about a girl and her four dolls, takes place in one afternoon. Betsy needs to choose one doll to bring to a friend's party. According to the invitation, prizes will be awarded to the best dressed, the oldest and the most talented dolls. Betsy has dolls that would do well in all of those areas, but instead of taking them, she chooses Jennifer who is not at all likely to win any awards. Her dress is tattered, she looks older than her years and all she can do is smile. She's not the best in any of the prize categories, but she is the best loved doll. At least that's what Betsy comes to realize when she follows her heart and brings Jennifer to the party.

The illustrations deliver the same sweet and gentle feeling as the text does. Some are in black and white and some have a touch of lavender, but all are beautifully detailed and still appealing today. According to a brief account at the back of the book, the illustrator "wanted the art to reflect the timelessness of the story. So he worked to achieve a period look that was both classic and feminine." I also love the cover with the girl in red, waiting at the front door. She makes you want to open the door and go inside with her!

There are many communication models. This particular one, from the field of Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), is commonly known as VAK (Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic). This book includes a fourth profile. In NLP terms, it is known as Auditory Digital (Ad). In this text, to better describe what's happening, I call it Internal Dialogue (Id). That also avoids confusion with ADD, a term not commonly known when NLP was originally developed. The full VAK-Id model is quite detailed, so in this book I will provide just a brief overview. Please keep in mind that, as with other models, all of us possess varying mixtures of all profiles.
 
Knowing how these styles differ can help you put your ideas across more clearly, and give your point of view greater acceptance. As well, you'll have a better handle on the messages people are sending and saying to you. It just makes sense to learn and use these skills.
 
Once you understand the different profiles, you can get your point across in a way that people will understand. You will establish rapport more quickly to facilitate smoother interactions and absorb information with greater ease and comprehension. As well, you will enhance your leadership skills and accelerate your career advancements.

About the Author
Born in England and raised near Montreal, Brian Walsh was a journalist and broadcaster before joining a major international firm. For much of his thirty-year career he was involved in human resources, specifically staff training. While living in the Canadian Arctic, Brian served as a Justice of the Peace, and studied Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and anthropology. Those experiences and extensive international travel prepared him for working with other cultures. He was then transferred to China where he served as his company's General Manager.After his return to Canada, he elected early retirement to further his earlier interest in NLP and hypnotherapy. He returned to formal study, and within four years had achieved his PhD. His dissertation, which focused on accelerated learning techniques, inspired his passion and his bestselling book, Unleashing Your Brilliance. Brian is dedicated to personal growth and enrichment through his articles, webinars, workshops, and audio / video products. He has co-authored a self-help book with Jack Canfield and John Gray: 101 Great Ways to Improve Your Life. Brian is an NLP Master Practitioner, a Hypnotherapist, an EFT Practitioner, and an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist.

Unexpected but appreciated information

The book is short, focused and concise. One doesn't have to dig for information; the information is readily available and easy to understand. On first read, the book seems to be the same ole, same ole, but it isn't. I really appreciated the added detail of the "words and phrases they use" and the "these communicators" listed under characteristics of each learning style. The sections titled "best practices for learning" were, also, very helpful.

This is a great little resource for learning more about yourself. Short, direct, and to-the-point, this self-audit will start you on the path to learning more about yourself, others, and how the world works with the Neurolinguistic Programming model. Most people know they have preferences - watching videos (visual), listening to music or talk radio (auditory), or playing sports (kinesthetic). But these preferences apply at a more profound level to every part of your life - whether those parts are learning, relationships, or work. Understanding yourself at a deeper level is essential for gaining control of, and improving, all parts of your life.

About the Author
Camille Bateman Haight, was born and raised in Sandy, Utah. She was born the fourth child in a family with eight children. “I grew up in a loving home full of great people. My parents taught me great things, among them was first a love of God, second a love of family, and third a belief in honing and using one’s talents.” From a very early age her father taught her a love of literature. She was encouraged to read books on her summer vacations, and write a book report on each one. Her father pushed her to learn new vocabulary words regularly to further her foundation. Her grandmother also had that same love of classic novels and poetry she read to young children at elementary schools and loved to read to all her grandchildren. Her love and influence just added to Camille’s fondness of good story telling. Her love of a good story can be seen within each chapter of her books. “A good story should pull at you from within, and bring forth a bond between you and the Characters as if they truly are you best friend or most hated foe. A good story will make you laugh out loud, or have tears slipping down your cheeks. A story should feel real, and engage you on every level,” Says Camille. Today Camille lives in southern Utah with her husband and young children, where she continues to pour herself into her stories. “I will write until I have nothing left, or until my fingers give up on me.” She said, knowing that for her, a good story is at the core of so many of life’s memorable moments.

This book has an amazing way of drawing you in. You feel like you are right there with the characters as they unwrap the intriguing mystery that surrounds Collett. It forges new friendships, kindles a romance within your heart, and holds you in suspense and terror with a shocking conclusion. I can't wait to see what comes next from C. B. Haight

Loved The Story Line

You can't help but fall in love with each of the characters and get swept away by the story. Its one of those that you hate to see it end and are eager for the release of the next book.

Forgotten Enemy by C.B. Haight is the first book in a series called The Powers of Influence. Cade is a werewolf and part of an organization entirely focused on protecting people from paranormal threats. When Roderick, one of his close friends and ally, asks that Cade look into one of Roderick’s employees, Cade is enthralled by his charge for protection. Collett is a seemingly skittish woman who doesn’t remember any of her past and is on the run for her life.  Creatures of evil regularly track her down and attempt to kill her and Collett doesn’t even know why. Cade, Roderick and his family work together to both keep Collett safe, but also figure out who she is. Collett is also slowly discovering powers that have been lying hidden and, on top of everything else, she must figure out how to manage these powers and determine what they might mean.  Together, they all must figure out who is hunting Collett and why. As the clues begin to fall into place, Cade and Collett also work to cope with their quickly changing relationship.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a little slow in terms of the action, but this allows the reader to savor the characters and the growing relationships. The romance grew organically and I really liked that. There were a lot of characters, but they all added something to the story in terms of actions or just information about the relationship between all the characters. I also liked that in addition to Cade and Collett’s point of views, the reader gets the point of view of the predator. It helps build up to the revelation near the end of the story, which I really liked. However, I really disliked how the story ends. Because the plot moves a little slowly and there are going to be more books in the series, the main mystery of the story was never resolved. Some information was revealed to at least keep the story going, but I really wish there was more. It almost felt as if the characters were really in the same place that they were at the beginning of the story.  This is frustrating because the slow pace and development of relationships can really cause the reader to become attached to the characters and how their lives progress.

The narration by Mikeal Narramore was pretty good. I did sometimes have a difficult time keeping track of who was speaking because some of the characters sounded similar, but over all he did a good job. The production quality was good as well. I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a good long lasting mystery and paranormal romances.

About the Author
Patrick Ness is the author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling Chaos Walking trilogy. He has won numerous awards, including the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the Booktrust Teenage Prize, and the Costa Children's Book Award. Born in Virginia, he lives in London.

Siobhan Dowd spent twenty years as a human rights campaigner for PEN and Amnesty International before her first novel, A SWIFT PURE CRY, was published in 2006. She won the Carnegie Medal posthumously in 2009 after her death at the age of forty-seven.

Jim Kay studied illustration and worked in the archives of the Tate Gallery and the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, two experiences that heavily influence his work. His images for A MONSTER CALLS use everything from beetles to breadboards to create interesting marks and textures. Jim Kay lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Subtle Masterpiece

"A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness runs along the veins of dark fairytales. In it, Conor O'Malley, whose mother battles with cancer, struggles with the universes of nightmare versus reality. Are they bleeding together? Are nightmares more real than he wants to admit? More importantly, who is this monster that claims Conor was the one who called for his help?

The monster who says he is a spirit as old as Earth itself transforms from the yew tree across the road into a ghastly presence (more so if you read the illustrated edition, whose art was masterfully crafted by Jim Kay), but Conor does not fear him. He say he is not as terrible as the monster in his nightmares as plain as we say our dish needs more salt.

The yew monster visits him at 12:07, afternoon or midnight, depending on when Conor needs him. He shares three stories, which seem like conventional children tales focused on teaching morals, but the yew monster proves to Conor as much as to us that the world is not as black and white as we were taught.

The thing I enjoyed most about this little book was the fearlessness Mr. Ness had concerning reality through those three stories and Conor's fourth. The vain can be good contributors to society, princes can take drastic measures to further a belief that isn't true, bullies can be cruel without throwing punches. And you could also be selfish when you shouldn't be, tired when you should be holding on, and that too is alright.

It is that fearlessness that encouraged me to give this book no less than four stars. In conjunction with stunning art and crisp, clear formatting, this little book becomes more than just a story...it is a reflection of reality that genre (and bestselling YA) books need again. It has an undeniable beating heart between the lines that first were penned by Siobhan Dowd. It is a story that moves all the chords of your soul, and dives into all the numb corners of your mind. Even if it does not coax tears, it is sure to pluck and scar a heartstring forever.

"Sometimes you read a book that you didn't know you needed to read" is a common thread placed in reviews for this novel. If anything, that is an understatement. "A Monster Calls" is a book that will rightfully become a children's literary masterpiece. It is a timeless tale for the hearts of children and adults; it will be there to help us all learn it's okay to let go.

A Monster Calls Me

This book is pretty incredible in my eyes. It took me longer then it probably did the average person reading this book. I dedicate my lunch breaks at work to reading. There were times I was reading it and had to put it down. Not because I didn't like it but because I have been in Conor's shoes and the book really struct every cord imaginable in me. I lost my Mom to cancer when I was 10 years old and this book used a creative, fantasy like way of interpreting the emotions a child goes through during that experience. As a fan of fantasy, fairy tales and monsters I could appreciate the unique spin the author used to tell the tale. An overall beautiful piece of literature that reminded me even 25 years after the loss of my mother that it's ok to let go.

Chilling, raw, and phenomenal!

One thing that is irrevocably human, regardless of age, is how we face the truth. A lot of times it's not as pretty as we like to think because the truth often equates to reality. Connor's nights are plagued by nightmares. His mind is clawing at his reality to tell him something. Something important. At a critical time in his life, as his mother suffers her ongoing illness, his nightmares come to life as the Monster. Or are they really nightmares? Is the Monster really their embodiment? The Monster is old magic of the earth. Older than any religion or belief. Connor's pain and rage has unwittingly called to him in his time of crisis, but is he here to help Connor, or destroy him?

This is one of those books that hits you inside. The story is about a young boy facing a reality he's afraid of. He represents everything it means to be a kid facing this situation and human in general. This is highly relateable story of inner demons and the contradiction of humanity. Patrick Ness has written a very true representation of the darkness in humans when faced with an unwilling truth. With fear. This is classified a teen and/or middle grade book, but it reads much deeper than that. As childlike as some aspects are, this story transcends age to reach the core of human emotions and relationships.

I had to binge read this. I started it and could not put it down. It is crafted brutally, beautifully, and as raw as any book can get. I cannot recommend this enough to everyone. It has quickly become a favorite of mine and one I plan to read more than once.

I would give this book a six star rating if I could. I had back pain for 30 years and did everything the physical therapists asked me to do religiously and it just made my back worse. I went to all kinds of back specialist doctors but wanted to avoid surgery if anyway possible. After much research and reading everything possible about back pain, I found Stuart McGill's book about lower back problems and all the study and research he had done. His book was very technical and hard to read for the average person. I read it completely and started doing the exercises and the lifestyle changes. It was an absolute miracle as my back pain went away completely in a couple of months. I recommended the book to a lot of people I knew with lower back problems. Most of them wouldn't make the effort to buy and read the book. I contacted Stuart and suggested he write a book normal people could easily understand. He said that was in his plans and he was already working on it. I made a three page summary of his complex book with pictures of the exercises and started giving those to people with back pain. It helped almost everyone that followed it! I was very excited when I learned Stuart's new book finally came out. I read it and it is a wonderful book that is very understandable. I think if people would read and follow his book about 80 to 90% of back surgery's could be avoided completely. If the medical establishment and physical therapists would start teaching his exercises and lifestyle changes our country could save a fortune on the cost of medical care. Back problems are a giant expense to our country and the world. If you have lower back problems this book could be the best money you ever spent on curing your back pain for good.

A Helpful Guide to Treating Back Pain

I relied on this book for a basic understanding of how the back works, common back problems, and corrective exercises and postures for alleviating back pain. After injuring my lower back performing high injury risk core exercises with high frequency, I was in pretty severe pain for over a year, and for part of that time could not sit or lift more than 5-10 lbs without triggering appreciable back pain. This book helped provide context for and clarity to my back pain and its treatment beyond the snippets of understanding I had acquired from visits to the doctor, physical therapy, and online searches, and helped to empower me to be my own advocate in the treatment of my back pain. In addition, it had some explanations on the mechanics of the back that I found insightful provided my background in engineering. I think I can say that putting this book into practice, with the help of my physical therapist and guidance from Dr. McGill via email, has my back on the mend.

I believe one of Dr. McGill's objectives with this book is for it to become a staple back pain self-help book on Amazon. The current best seller in the back pain category on Amazon is Healing Back Pain by John Sarno, which according to reviews suggests that in many cases back pain is related to a condition called Tension Mytostis Syndrome (TMS). I have not read the book, but get the impression it has tinctures of snake oil in its claims that back pain is psychosomatic and can be changed by psychological adjustments. In contrast, Dr. McGill's book seems to be the result of a lot of rigorous testing to understand the back and how compromised backs respond to adjustments in movement and therapy, and states that back pain has physical causes. So to echo Dr. McGill's words to me, if you've read his book and found it helpful, please provide a review of his book. It may eventually help save others from being led astray by doctors claiming a gospel of mysterious conditions and miracle cures for back pain, and lead them towards an easy-to-read, concise, medically-credible guide for treating back pain.

I live in the orthopedic capital of the world, Denver, Colorado. (We have skiing. Skiing can be harmful.) There are so many orthopedists, they all want a chance to train. Remove the lid of a trash can, depositing your dog’s refuse, and a five-or six-man practice pops out rushing you to email your MRI to their can.
If you have a back issue or sciatic pain, read Stu McGill’s Back Mechanic and immediately put his program to use. He strongly recommended it to me and with capital letters when I had a scheduled surgery. That’s bold.
I would as strongly make that recommendation to anyone reading this, in CAPITALS.
But there’s something sincere about a man with HUGE mustache. I was able to clear most of my sciatic pain in one week after suffering two years of unbelievable bouts of pain. I can recall to this day, the audible crack, improperly swinging a kettlebell. Sometimes, I’d be walking along and the sciatic nerve would suddenly inflame and I’d collapse.
I’m a lifetime athlete, but 65 at this writing.
I was desperate for help. But I cancelled fusion when I saw on Facebook that too few surgeries are successful and the ones that are successful take a year recovering, and not the eight short weeks I was quoted.
Instead, I scheduled a fourth corticosteroid injection. While awaiting that, I read Back Mechanic and started practicing Dr. McGill’s method, which incorporates a theory unlike the philosophies of the PT world and that of the god, Joseph Pilates. (Dr. McGill is a true iconoclast.) I cancelled the injection.
The large point Dr. McGill makes in the book, back conditions will heal on their own. Should I repeat that? The back will heal itself. And this is so big. I was informed of this earth- shaking information by no medical professional, among them: five physical therapists, two physiatrists, a neurologist, and two spine surgeons, champing at the bit to cut. Epilogue!

I was so happy to receive this second volume of Seven Days. The conclusion is very satisfying but I'd be lying if I didn't say I want more.
I first read this series as a scanlation and if you readers want the full, well edited version then pick this up. The bootlegged version I read online didn't even have the adorable epilogue at the end of the story. *****Minor Spoiler***** It shows Yuzuru's graduation and there's a sweet and tender moment between the two leads. I would of never knew about it if I hadn't bought this!Support the mangaka and buy this series. It's completely worth it.

illegible on a 7" tablet

I bought a tablet specifically to read digital manga and I love how easy it is to buy the manga for Kindle. I've bought digital manga before, but always as pdfs which had to be sideloaded onto the tablet. Buying directly from Amazon was faster (instant download!), hassle-free, and cheaper than buying the pdf from the publisher so I was initially very happy.

However, this book is not formatted well for a 7" tablet. The images are good quality but "page size" is about half the screen size in portrait view. In landscape view, three pages show up side by side, thus making them even smaller. In portrait view, you can double click on the image to enlarge it but the image quality is reduced, making some of the text illegible. Also, you can't scroll if an image is enlarged. You have to close the image so that it returns to the original formatting, turn the page, tap to enlarge, read, close image, etc.

The only way I can read this book is if I download the Kindle app to my desktop computer, which for me totally defeats the point of having an ebook.

Until Digital Manga Publishing can format the digital manga so that it can be read on a 7" tablet, I'm sticking with the pdf format.

This continues to be one of my favorite BL/Shounen-Ai series ever

This continues to be one of my favorite BL/Shounen-Ai series ever. If you're new to the genre, this is the way to go. The story is really original and super, super cute. I always find myself reading it again after a few months because I love the story so much. The artwork is also gorgeous (as is everything by Takarai Rihito), and I can't get enough of it. Highly recommended!!
