Eagle's Wings: The Autobiography of a Luftwaffe Pilot, by Hajo Herrmann

After more than forty years, Hajo Herrmann, one of the best know Luftwaffe pilots of World War II has written his autobiography. With well over three hundred operational missions and with a tally of nine RAF bombers destroyed during mass attacks on Germany the author was one of the most successful Luftwaffe pilots of World War II. The author writes about his career from the early days when he was an officer cadet in the German army, through his experiences as a founder member of the Condor Legion in Spain, to the part he played in the war. Herrmann was an acknowledged expert in anti-shipping operations, a divisional commander and creator of the "Wild Boar" method of night fighting. He was a close confidant of Herrmann Goering, who promoted him to high office in the fighter defence of the Third Reich.

The "Wild Boar" tells his own Story
By A Customer
The foremost personalities of the "Nightfighters War" are inextricably linked with their specialities.Wolfgang "the falcon" Falck will always be considered the "father of Nightfighting in WWII", but above all a chivalrous gentleman. The immortal Lent and Prinz Sayn zu-Wittgenstein will be remembered for their self-sacrifice, brilliance and staggering scores. And Hajo Herrmann will be remembered for the Wilde Zau tactics which arguably thwarted Bomber Harris's plans to crush Germany in 1943-1944. In a complex technological war when the British scientists had the upper hand in quashing German radars, Hajo Herrmann proposed the abandonment of the technological burden and return to free lance fighting. Many experts have blasted Herrmann for going against all the technological advances the NachtJager had made uptil 1943, however I have believe that Herrmann didn't want to replace technological know-how with blind flying "Wild Boar tactics" but simply to gain time for the German scientists to respond to British advances in the scientific aspect of the Nightfighters' War. Many blame Herrmann for Kammhuber's dismissal (rather removal to Norway). That is true but the final blame lay with the "fat one" who simply never got a grip on the great advances made in aerial warfare since WWI. Personally, I don't understand how Goering could command the JagdStaffel "Richthofen" in 1918 after the Red Baron's death when there were other highly capable leaders left, most notably, the Red Baron's brother, Lothar(a 44-victory ace). I say this because many people assume that simply because he commanded the illustrious "JagdGeschwader 1 Richthofen" in WWI , he was a tactian.Far from it. He was no where near Bolcke or Richthofen in that field. Back to subject at hand, controversial as Kammhumber's dismissal was, it is most interesting to speculate what would have happened if the immortal Helmut Lent had been appointed Inspector of NightFighters and then Goering had tried to dismiss him!?! HE undoubtedly would have had a revolt of the Nightfighter pilots as he did the Dayfighters. Nevertheless, Hajo Herrmann brought a new type of fighting which could have only worked temporarily. Most Wilde Zau pilots couldn't adapt to blind flying. Herrmann was a brilliant pilot, and he made the mistake of assuming that others would be just like him. Hundreds of his pilots parachuted destroying undamaged aircraft in the process. But he temporarily stemmed the bomber's tide until the NachtJager could resume their technological war. And for this Herrmann will forever be associated with the "Wild Boars of the Night".

The Personal Story of a Controversial Man
By A Customer
Of all the Luftwaffe officers involved in the internal politics of their service, Hajo Herrmann was one of those who became thoroughly embroiled in the fighting. However, he didn't come to such prominence until after 1943. He accounts of his life and service uptil that time are very colourful indeed. He was one of the "Spaniards" of the Condor Legion. And he had a good tour there. His accounts are reflective and philosophical. His autobiography is well aided by quotes from philosophers. He was the hero of many bombing raids, on England and Greece and other theatres of operations. But he gained greater prominence when his ideas about night defense were finally heard by Goering, especially after the disaster of Hamburg in 1943. He proved his theories about Wilde Zau tactics and was eventually put in command of a JagdGeschwader dedicated to that type of fighting. Always coming up with radical ideas, he finally clashed with Galland, General der Jagdflieger (GdJ) over the ramming operations Herrmann proposed. Herrmann also felt resentment, he considered officers like Galland, early war years pilots, to be out of touch with the 'reality' of the war. Paradoxically, officers like Galland had thought the same of men like Goering the same way in the early years. An interesting point. The mutiny over the position of Inpecktur der Jagdflieger completed the full scale clash of personalities and not just between Herrmann and Galland. At the edge of the precipice in 1944-1945, the Luftwaffe was open to radical ideas, and Herrmann was willing to supply them. So he got his way. Nevertheless, his ideas of an aircraft which could unite all the virtues of fighters, bombers and Stukas says much about his thinking. Yet 1944-1945 were not for new ideas, but to make the best use of resources. Herrmann was a tough pilot, his personal courage beyond question, despite the accusations of his sceptics.( He was the winner of the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with the Oak Leaves and Swords) Despite his friendship with colleagues and his tactical thinking, his name will remain linked to the controversial ideas and the general dissent within the Luftwaffe in the latter years of the Second World War.

One of the Definitive Accounts of the Night war over Germany
By A Customer
It was in 1943, after the devastating bombing of Hamburg, that Herman Goering had called a young ex-bomber pilot and told him " the defense of Germany now lies in your hands." That man was Major Hajo Herrmann. Just from that it can be summarized how important he was to the German war effort. The inventor of the Wilde Zau (Wild Boar) and the later Zahme Zau (Tame Boar) tactics, Hajo Herrmann was one of the most dynamic and visionary officers of the Luftwaffe. And he writes his autobiography with flair, and philosophical insight. His personal courage was never held in question, the hero of countless bombing missions, and the winner of the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, he was held in respect by superior and colleague alike. It would seem uptil 1943 he was in a relatively stable position, politically at least in the Luftwaffe. But his innovative ideas propelled him into the forefront of the infighting which was prevalent in the Luftwaffe hierarchy. It was in 1943, after the bombing of Hamburg that he successfully applied his Wilde Zau tactics, flying in a Me109T, roving bands of single-engined fighters on frei jagd without ground assistance hurling themselves at the bomber streams over Germany. He goes into all of this with great detail. Initially he received support from men like Galland. But as time went on they began to clash, to Herrmann, men like Galland who had only fought in the early stages of the war had lost touch with reality, ironically, a few years earlier, men like Galland had considered men like Goering to be out of touch with reality. A very complex situation. Compounded by the fight over the position of the Inspector of Fighters, which only created more bitter feelings. In the end it must be said, that in 1943-45, Germany had dwindling resources, and Herrmann was one of those who tried to use them as best he could in his position. Brilliant tactician, opportunist, friend, philosopher, all these words and more come to mind when describing Hajo Herrmann. One must judge for oneself.
