Analysis, Synthesis, and Perception of Musical Sounds contains a detailed treatment of basic methods for analysis and synthesis of musical sounds, including the phase vocoder method, the McAulay-Quatieri frequency-tracking method, the constant-Q transform, and methods for pitch tracking with several examples shown. Various aspects of musical sound spectra such as spectral envelope, spectral centroid, spectral flux, and spectral irregularity are defined and discussed. One chapter is devoted to the control and synthesis of spectral envelopes. Two advanced methods of analysis/synthesis are given: "Sines Plus Transients Plus Noise" and "Spectrotemporal Reassignment" are covered. Methods for timbre morphing are given. The last two chapters discuss the perception of musical sounds based on discrimination and multidimensional scaling timbre models.

About the Author

James W. Beauchamp has been working in the area of analysis, synthesis, and perception of musical sounds for over 40 years. He is editor and co-author of Music by Computers (Wiley, 1969), a fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and of the Acoustical Society of America, former president and board member of the International Computer Music Association, and has published numerous papers in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, the Computer Music Journal, Proceedings of the International Computer Music Conference, Proceedings of the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, Proceedings of the International Society of Musical Acoustics, and Proceedings of the IEEE Workshop on Applicatiions of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics. For over thirty years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign he taught courses on musical acoustics, electronic music, and computer music (in the School of Music) and audio engineering, electronic music synthesis, and acoustics (in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). During spring, 1988 he was a visiting scholar at the Center for Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, and during 1994-95 he was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics and Music in Paris. His research interests have been in electronic and computer music synthesis systems, analysis, synthesis, and perception of musical instrument sounds, automatic pitch detection, and instrument separation.

Excellent book on audio signal processing & musical timbre

Covers both the "classic" techniques and some very recent advances in the analysis, modification and synthesis of musical sounds. The chapters on the psychoacoustics of musical timbre are excellent. I've got virtually every available book in the general area of audio signal processing and musical psychoacoustics, and this one is clearly the best so far. Chapters are contributed by several different authors. They provide both a clear review or summary of each topic and some cutting-edge "goodies" describing recent research and techniques in areas such re-synthesis of transients and noise, frequency tracking, and sound morphing.

Discovering the Beauty of Musical Sound: A Must-Have for Music Signal Processing Novice and Expert

This book covers a major area of music signal processing, namely analysis, synthesis and perception (AS&P) of musical sound. The book is nicely written by leading experts in this field and coherently organized. In the analysis part, the authors provide important tools for investigating the internal structure of musical sound. These tools also serve as important feature extractors for content-based music information retrieval (such as multimedia search). The synthesis part is a nice extension for analysis. First, because analysis and synthesis are essentially always connected in concept and practice of Music DSP (such as "analysis by synthesis"), the synthesis part in this book is naturally part of the core arsenal of sound analysis. Second, musical sound synthesis has its own applications, the same as speech synthesis. The perception part is also nicely written and provides complete examples of cognition experiments with a summary of experimental results.

This book is important for graduate students, academic researchers, and industry developers working in the field of music signal processing. Besides covering the fundamentals of music SP, this book clearly outlines current research frontiers (and open problems). The algorithms are clearly illustrated and many have readily available implementations. I feel the majority of the available books on music SP are too close to speech SP (or they treat music SP as a "recent" extension from speech SP). This book is unique because it is specifically targeted to music (as the editor points out in the preface, music SP also has a very long research tradition). Another reason that I find this book appealing is that the most essential tools can be learned and implemented quickly. The book is edited in a consistent narrative style so it is easy to navigate. The depth in most chapters is masterfully arranged so the basics are covered first and then the advanced materials are included. I think this "structure" feature is important because it relieves the readers from having to perform extensive literature search themselves while maintaining easy readability.

Concise, Accurate, Comprehensive, Logical, Practical.

I have been using this book on and off for the last 3 years, and intensely for the last year and a half, as part of my Ph.D. dissertation in Engineering and Applied Science---Physics. I have used directly only the first chapter, the only one written by the Editor, James W. Beauchamp. I've glanced through the rest of it, but my review is largely based on this first chapter.

Professor Beauchamp's organization and presentation of the material is amazingly clear and logical. This becomes more apparent when one considers (recent) literature on this very specialized field, acoustical digital signal processing (DSP). That been said, the material is not easy to grasp for the reader not familiar with DSP and acoustics fundamentals. The mathematical theory has a natural hierarchical structure and every single equation in the first chapter is justified. I could be hard-pressed to single out one equation or concept that does not add considerable value to this product.

I particularly enjoyed the deliberate emphasis on the interdisciplinarity of the subject. DSP, acoustics theory (both from a physics and an engineering perspective), and psychoacoustics all blend well, their parts carefully weighted to give the reader a working knowledge of each part's contribution. Intuitive as this may sound, it is not common practice in the general acoustics DSP literature. It takes a person with immense practical experience and theoretical background to achieve that. Professor Beauchamp's central role in this space is grounded on years of relevant teaching at the Univ. of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) as well as his expertise on practical applications of this material.

Everything presented in the first chapter can be readily applied using Dr. Beauchamp's free software, SNDAN, on both Windows/DOS and Unix platforms, and can be found here . Once downloaded, the user can push his acoustic signals (saved as .wav files) by calling one of two functions, the Phase Vocoder analysis, or the McAuley-Quatieri analysis. Even though this is not a GUI application, the commands are sequential in the sense that once you upload the .wav file and chose which method you want to run, the DOS prompt asks you what you want to do next, like, for example, plot certain harmonics (only fundamental, or a weighted average of the first harmonics based on psychoacoustical experiments), spectral irregularity (corresponding to a feeling of "jaggedness"), normalized spectral centroid (corresponding to the percieved quality of sound brightness), amplitude or frequency over time, amplitude vs. frequency, amplitude vs. frequency over time (3-D plots), musical pitch vs. time (actual musical tones), and more. Another capability is raw calculation of fomulas presented in the first chapter of the book, like for example spectral centroid averages (so you can compare your signal to the perceived brightness of certain instruments), or the linear regression equation of a suggested analysis frequency for the Phase Vocoder method. Another notable feature is its ability to manipulate the signal by substituting certain spectral regions with root mean squares or weighted or straight averages of the same spectrum, apply filetring, smoothing, and being able to export the data as a raw ASCII file for further manipulation in other software like MATLAB, SAS, or R. Yet another cabability is its smart re-synthesizing of manipulated signals, something i have not had the chance to explore yet. As a matter of fact, SNDAN is so flexible, that it can be of as much use to the practicing sound engineer as it can be to the researching/teaching professor or graduate student. An ideal tool for sound lab demos and practice. If you download SNDAN and run your data through it, you will see so many interesting pictures of your signal, you will be tempted to buy the book so you can understand their meaning. And the first chapter of the book does justice to the peice of software. By the way, the rest of the chapters are not implementable in SNDAN.

The rest of the chapters feature well-established names, like Dr. Judith C. Brown (inventor of the Q-transform). I have not worked with timbre, but from what little i know, it seems like the treatment is as comprehensive as it is cutting-edge [three (3) out of a total of eight (8) chapters dedicated to it]. Fundamental frequency estimation, sound synthesis, spectral envelopes as additive models, and data reduction is some other topics covered.

The book is concise and can be read as a stand-alone source, the information is accurate and up-to-date, economical yet comprehensive, the material throughout is presented logically, and the theory is readily applied using the author's software, SNDAN. A wonderful and needed publication in the field of acoustical DSP, indeed.

ANNE JUDGE is Professor Emeritus of French and Linguistics at the University of Surrey, UK. She has lectured and published extensively on language and linguistic legislation, originally in relation to France, French within the EU, and the Francophone world, but more recently on linguistic legislation in Britain, finding their similarities and differences both fascinating and enlightening. She is co-author of a history of French style, Stylistic Developments in Literary and Non-Literary French Prose (1995), and is perhaps best known as co-author of A Reference Grammar of Modern French, first published in 1983.

Answer keys are a little bit questionable.

There are apparently two versions floating around (from the same edition and same printing) with different answer keys in the back for some of the more difficult problems.
Otherwise, this is the standard textbook for game theory for political science. I'm inspired to read Schelling!

Excellent introductory text: it's as technical as you want

One of the nice things about this book is it can be as technical or mathematical as you want. If you just want the concepts, you won't be jarred by lots of equations. But if you like the technical aspects, they're all there, especially in the appendix.
Great simple treatment of everything from basic Nash Equilibrium to more sophisticated concepts such as Bayesian information analysis.
The only potential disappointment of this book is if you know game theory well and are looking for something very sophisticated, this is not the book for you -- not because there's anything wrong with this book, but because it wasn't designed for that level.

Excellent graduate level textbook

This book is an excellent introduction to game theory for the political science graduate student. Although some prior knowledge of economics and game theory would certainly help, the early chapters in the book are excellent in familiarizing the reader with basic formal concepts.
A few comments by the previous reviewer may be misunderstood by some readers. This is NOT a "general concepts" book - in other words this is NOT game theory for poets - not that I hold anything against poets. This book does require some undergraduate level mathematics, mainly differential and integral calculus. Those looking for rigorous formal proofs of all theorems will be disappointed, but this is a technical book with an emphasis on demonstrating the application of formal tools to common problems in political science. Some of the material such as the chapter on perfect and sequential equilibria can be quite challenging.
If you merely wish to get a sense of what formal political science is all about and do not intend to actually fire up the old calculator, I suggest Robert Axelrod's excellent book "The Evolution of Cooperation".

The Seagraves, bestselling authors (Lords of the Rim, etc.), contend that Japan systematically looted the entire continent of Asia during WWII, seizing billions in precious metals, gems and artworks. Further, according to the authors, from war's end to the present, the looted treasure, used by President Truman to create a secret slush fund to fight communism, has had a malignant effect on American and Asian politics. The Seagraves assert that the Japanese imperial family, along with Ferdinand Marcos, every American president from Harry Truman to George W. Bush, and numerous sinister figures on the American hard right have been tainted and in many cases utterly corrupted by the loot. Postwar efforts to recover and exploit the treasure, according to the Seagraves, involved murders, dishonest deals and cover-ups. Readers who want to examine the full range of sources for this controversial account are referred in the book to the authors' Web site, where two CDs containing "more than 900 megabytes" of supporting documentation are available. But a paradox affecting conspiracy histories such as this one is the authors' frequent insistence that the malefactors have suppressed relevant evidence. Conceptual difficulties of this sort make it impossible for the lay reader to judge this book's credibility, even while one is swept up in the high-intensity story the Seagraves tell. FYI: The authors claim that in consequence of their revealing the existence of the slush fund and its resulting "global network of corruption," they have received "veiled death threats."

Announcing they might be murdered for writing this book, the Seagraves proceed to tell an involved story about Japanese plunder from World War II that, never returned to its rightful owners, underwrites political slush funds and other financial legerdemain conducted by American and Japanese power brokers. According to the cognoscenti, some of the boodle is called the M-Fund, after the initial of a Douglas MacArthur crony who set it up; the gold behind it, in turn, was secreted in the Philippines under the supervision of the imperial Japanese family. The Seagraves, reputable authors of East Asian histories, advance considerable sourcing for their claims, some of which, however, rely precariously on the word of single individuals, while others are anonymous. It is, therefore, a challenge for the reader to decide what's true here, such as the authors' explosive assertion that Richard Nixon exchanged a political promise (returning Okinawa to Japan) for money from the M-Fund. In any event, the Seagraves' tale of treasure hunting, war crimes, and skulduggery will prompt some head scratching. Gilbert Taylor

Earth-Shattering, Faith-Shaking, Well-Documented Deceit

This book is earth-shattering and faith-shaking, a well-documented tale of deceit at the highest levels of the US government. So controversial and potentially explosive are the findings of this book, to wit, that the White House recovered most of the Nazi and Japanese loot and created a secret slush fund for covert political operations world-wide, that the authors go the extra mile and offer, at a nominal price, two CD-ROMS containing 60,000 pages of supporting documentation including the Japanese treasure maps used by the US to recover the gold and other valuables.
Major players include Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Nixon, both Allen and John Foster Dulles, Douglas MacArthur, John McCloy, and the famous unconventional warrior Edward Lansdale. What we learn from this book is that those writing about "blowback" (the consequences of unwise US actions) have barely scratched the surface. What we learn is that rather than truly seeking to help the Japanese, Chinese, and other looted nations recover in the aftermath of WWII, the most senior leaders of the US government, no doubt with the best of intentions, actually conspired with Nazi bankers and the Japanese imperial family to create a Black Eagle Trust controlled by a very select hand-picked cabal in Washington.
Originally used to fight communism, the Black Eagle Trust, according to the authors and as thoroughly documented by the book and the two CD-ROMS (which I am happy to have in hand), quickly became a global slush fund used to bribe national leaders and manipulate elections around the world. This fund remains in existence today, making the Swiss Holocaust funds seem like loose-change. According to the authors, major banks are "addicted" to the funds and would face collapse if public investigations resulted in a forced return of this gold and related certificates to the rightful owners.
The authors have produced a magnificent work of both scholarship and investigative journalism. They document the extent of Japanese looting of Korea (beginning in 1895) and China as well as the other countries in the "co-prosperity sphere." They document the manner in which Japan hid most of the gold in the Philippines (some in Indonesia), and were forced to leave it there from 1943 onwards, when US submarine interdiction became too effective to risk shipments homeward.
I found the level of detail in this book to be quite gripping. The ingenious nature of the Japanese burial sites, with caverns below the more obvious tunnels, with sea-water protection, with maps created in reverse--and the in-bred cruelty of the Japanese, thinking nothing of burying all of the US and other national slave labor *and the Japanese engineers* alive as the final stage of protecting the looted treasure, leave one stunned.
The authors document the central role played by Lansdale in recognizing the opportunity and then briefing MacArthur and then President Truman. According to the authors, the architects of the Black Eagle Trust were three advisors to President's Roosevelt's Secretary of War, Henry Stimson: John McCloy (later head of the World Bank), Robert Lovett (later Secretary of Defense), and Robert Anderson (later Secretary of the Treasury). They made the case to Roosevelt, and presumably to Truman after Roosevelt died, that it would be impractical to return the looted gold to the rightful owners, in part because many of the looted countries were now under Soviet control.
The authors, who conducted many interviews in support of the work, including interviews of former CIA deputy director Ray Cline, who they say was involved with Lansdale and the gold in the 1940's and remained involved with the black gold through the 1980's, provide copies of documents showing the redirection of the looted gold to 176 bank accounts in 42 countries. The gold was then used to support the creation of gold bearer certificates that were in turned used to bribe the most senior officials around the world.
The authors tell a shocking tale of how quickly MacArthur chose to collaborate with the very leadership of Japan that declared war on the USA and was responsible for genocide and looting in Asia on a scale rarely achieved by anyone else. Bringing the story up to date, the authors show how prior attempts to investigate the Black Eagle Trust have led to the ruin of individuals such as Norbert Schlei, at one time deputy attorney general to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. While I have no direct knowledge and cannot be certain myself, I believe the authors have provided a sufficiently compelling case to warrant an international investigation concurrently with a General Accounting Office investigation to be chartered by Congress with unlimited supeona powers specifically directed against classified personalities and archives.
If this story is true, and I personally think that it is, then the US government, in active collusion with the very people the American people fought to defeat in WWII, has been guilty of fraud and depravity on a global scale and against the best interests of both the American people, and the against the rightful owners of the looted gold and other treasures. The authors may well have uncovered the last really big secret of the post-WW II era, and in so doing, opened the way for a restoration of the balance of power among diverse nations, and a sharp delimitation of the abuses that appear to characterize American leadership when it thinks it can rely on secret gold and stolen oil to engage in imperial adventures and domestic improprieties. As an American citizen and voter, and as a person of faith who believes that we must do unto others as we would have them do unto us, I find this book to be shocking, credible, and a basis for popular outrage and demands for truth and reconciliation.

ASTOUNDING RESEARCH.

I don't know what angers me more: the absolutely startling facts unraveled in this book, or the sad reality that such jaw-dropping research is at a sub-15000 ranking in terms of sales on Amazon and has garnered only 3 reviews.
I happened to buy this book perchance while casually browsing the non-fic section at an airport. Now I recall my hair standing on its end as I read it on my flight. The only other book I recall seething with anger with while reading was "The Rape of Nanking".
"Gold Warriors" is more than a nail in the coffin of Japan's "serious, sober and deliberate" plundering of Asia's treasure from 1895 until 1945, and its collusion after the war with American officials to recover and use the loot as a secret political action slush fund to denounce communism. It is in fact a journey into the darkest recesses of history and the human soul.
The authors are not afraid to name names, and the excruciatingly detailed research is a marvel. The sheer scale and limits of the underlying deceit are mind blowing.
Some very minor observations. The authors may know their Philippines well, but their statements on Japan could be corrected. The book has some minor errors (that I could figure out) --
(1) The Japanese ship they repeatedly call the "Huzi" should actually be "Fuji"
(2) The important Japanese Sea port is "Maizuru" not "Maisaru"
(3) "Tairiki" is not a Japanese word: they probably meant "Tairiku Ronin", i.e., a Continental adventurer (in reference to Chinese carpetbaggers)
(4) Their mysterious "Lord Ichivara" should most likely be "Ishihara" (Ichivara is somewhat implausible)

Gold Warriors: Why the POWs in Asia were Betrayed!

In 1947, Gen. Douglas MacArthur ordered the immediate termination of all investigations of Japanese war crimes and the immediate suspension of the arrest of any suspected war criminals.
In June 2000, Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah) said, "You mean our federal government can just say, 'To hell with you, Bataan Death Marchers, and you people who were mistreated (by the Japanese), we are just going to waive all your rights.'"
As disturbing and painful as it may be to read, this is a book all victims of the Japanese, and their next of kins, must read. It's documentation and research is beyond reproach. For many of us, this book will be our 'fall from innocence', if that is still possible.

Great instructional book

Building Credibility in Leadership is a great book for leaders in the secular and spiritual arenas. The information given provides great guidance to leaders of all ages and types. The development of leaders is one of the most important vehicles to ensure the continuation of an organization. It is a task that takes knowledge, skill and wisdom. This book offers it all!

Reading this book has assisted me in my personal and professional life as a Christian who operates in primary and secondary leadership roles as a minister, counselor, mentor and entrepreneur. Whether is in the walls of the sanctuary or the walls of the conference room, the wisdom, shared by Bishop Michael A. Blue Sr., can activate change in your scope and performance as a leader.

I recommend it to all!

I purchased the e-version of BCIL because of its convenience. I am THOROUGHLY pleased with the product's content. Bishop Michael Blue is a prolific author and shares incredible insights in Leadership. The tools provided in the manuscript can be applied in several arenas such as churches, corporations, municipalities, social clubs and education. I encourage everyone to get a copy and allow the content to positively affect their lives.

Not Bad, but not great!

"Business Plans That Work" might work for you, if you're planning on marketing a product (not a service business) and borrowing ALOT of money. The sub-title of the book is "A guide for small business". The problem I had with this book is that it assumes that you want to borrow $500,000 or more and start a business revolving around a product. I would not consider that a small business! I was more interested in starting a service business (UPS or Fed Ex shipping store), but the examples in this book didn't translate very well for that goal. The book follows a start up toy company called Firefly Toys, whose product is a toy designed for children that are coping with a life crisis (divorce, death, abuse). To me this is kind of goofy! The reader would be more well served if the book had exapmles from many different kinds of businesses, or at least a more mainstream product. Bottom Line: This is not a bad book for any business. It does have a fair amount of useful info, but I would definitely try to get it from the library if I were you!

Best small book on step-by-step Business Plans

This small book does a splendid job in explaining the business planning process more simple and uncomplicated than most books on business planning that often are too comprehensive and detailed - sometimes probably creating "paralysis by analysis" for the users.

The approach is a practical step-by-step procedure with the same specific case study throughout the book ("FireFly Toys"). At the end of the book, there's an alternative case study - including Powerpoint presentation - on another industry ("Fossa Medical"). Both case studies' 4-page executive summaries should inspire each and every manager to present his venture or business in this concise and exemplary manner...

It is indeed a no-nonsense guidebook and I especially like the small critical comments that the authors have inserted in the margins (as speech balloons).

Being a corporate strategist, I spend most of my time working with strategic issues including business plans. So I read a book on this topic with a subtle skepticism. But it was a pleasant surprise ;-)

Thus, I can highly recommend this easy-to-read 183-page book.

Does the job

There's no shortage of competition for books on this topic. In fact there are two others with the exact same title. This book makes it plain that its focus is small businesses, and as such I think the text offers roughly the right tone and degree of complexity for its intended audience. I've read more authoritative books on business plans, but several were too complex for a small business audience. Recommended, although best to compare to some of the competition to find the one that feels best for you.
