Methods of nonparametric estimation are located at the core of modern statistical science. The aim of this book is to give a short but mathematically self-contained introduction to the theory of nonparametric estimation. The emphasis is on the construction of optimal estimators; therefore the concepts of minimax optimality and adaptivity, as well as the oracle approach, occupy the central place in the book.

This is a concise text developed from lecture notes and ready to be used for a course on the graduate level. The main idea is to introduce the fundamental concepts of the theory while maintaining the exposition suitable for a first approach in the field. Therefore, the results are not always given in the most general form but rather under assumptions that lead to shorter or more elegant proofs.

The book has three chapters. Chapter 1 presents basic nonparametric regression and density estimators and analyzes their properties. Chapter 2 is devoted to a detailed treatment of minimax lower bounds. Chapter 3 develops more advanced topics: Pinsker's theorem, oracle inequalities, Stein shrinkage, and sharp minimax adaptivity.

About the Author
Dr Maurizio Ragazzi has degrees from the Universities of Angelicum and Ferrara in Italy; Columbia, New York and Oxford. He practised for five years with an international law firm during which time he was an international arbitrator. He is now counsel in the Legal Department of the World Bank in Washington, DC.

A Unique Monograph

This monograph is excellent: a thorough, clear and originalscientific work. The two ideas that I found most important are the ethical basis of international obligations erga omnes and the distinction between obligations erga omnes and self-existent obligations (a distinction regularly missed in the international literature). I was also impressed by the command of the whole field of international law displayed by its author and the international outlook of the work (with citations in more than 10 languages). A "must read" for lawyers, diplomats, moral philosophers and, more generally, everybody interested in the rule of law in international relations.

After waiting months to use this book, I was very disappointed. Although Ragazzi has written one of the only authorities on this topic, it is lacking in many aspects. He makes ambitious assertions, including that which states that erga omnes obligations are attached to those rights which are moral absolutes. Unfortunately he does not explore what in fact constitutes a moral absolute. Does it derive from fundamental human rights? What are fundamental human rights and where do they arise from? Neither natural law or positive law theories are discussed, and the reader is expected to accept his position unquestioned. He makes an attempt to list those right which are to be accorded erga omnes status, however by going beyond those which are universally accepted as basic rights, he reduces the authority of his work. To assert that a right to development is likely to be erga omnes, when it is not yet truly accepted in the international legal community, is a stretch. His discussion of the judicial origins and evolution of erga omnes is fair, and provides a good starting point. The footnotes and bibliography are excellant, and provide a rich source of work to draw upon if pursuing this area of law, however overall, the book is unimpressive.

A DOUBLE ESPRESSO OF PIPING HOT EROTICA

I have a reading window shaped like an hour. Tis far too miserable to go outside. Spring, what spring? So I am hunkered down in a large empty refectory in a Canary Wharf corporate. It's modern in a pleasing way, with a view over a windswept London dock and of hundreds of people tooing and froing from the tube station.

So far, so good. You know how it is, finding time to ourselves, eye time. So many things get in the way of a good read.

My kindle tells me I am 93 percent into Lucy Pireel's BOUND. Excellent. And the read is excellent, too. A swift sip of moccha, decaf. Don't want to get toooo excited now, do we? Especially with a double shot of hot hot erotica to roll our socks up and down.

And then who should rock up, or rather sloth down, but the collegue from limbo land: Ivor Dull-But-Worthy (name changed to spare blushes).

I try to pretend i am not there but or that he is not there. But I am there and he is there. I try feigning narcolepsy but he is still there, still talking when I open a sly eye.

'Look,' says I, 'I don't mean to be rude but .." I pull my phone out, smiling. 'Mother's birthday .. Excuse me.' The ruse works. He leaves and I get Kindling.

The problem with reading a book we are very much into is that we read too fast. It is the same effect as when time speeds up when we are having a good time.

I started reading BOUND over my porridge. I only stopped because I had to shave and shower and get out of the house to go to work. I continued reading the moment I got on my train into London. I read more when I was on the tube from London Bridge to Canary Wharf. And I finished the read as soon as I got a moment to myself in the refectory.

Had I been able to I would have read BOUND in one nibble of a wonton nipple.

This tells me that the story engaged me and carried me with it. The language never got in the way. I did not pause to fret about this or that. The story simply bossed my eyes.

I won't give the plot away, as this is a lean novella. What I will say is that it progresses with urgency and mounting intensity.

If you don't like erotica perhaps BOUND is not for you. No problemo. If you do like erotica, you will love BOUND - a double-espresso of literary arousal. I loved it.

Amelia is a girl who sub who knows what she wants and how to get it. Her descriptions of her pleasure are mind-blowing. "Sex is the drug," they lyric goes. Amelia's sexual highs are acutely captured. There is a joy about all this.

But it is more complex than that. This is not plain vanilla sex. There are issues of sub and dom involved, with capital P-Pain playing a key role, with 'the pleasurable sting taking Amelia over the abyss into orgasm' more than once.

And if knots are your thing, you will relish the references to 'Challengers, Prisoner's Cuffs and Hightwaymen'. Personally, I will learn something from this Knot School novella.

The story is straightforward but the characters are not. Insights are to be had into how we are, or some of us are, those who have opportunity and inclination. Perhaps the characters are more alive than we are. Perhaps they do things we may only dream about. Or maybe I am leading a very sheltered life and need to wake up and smell the leather.

Did the story turn me on. Yes. It also made me laugh more than once, especially one dab where the rock star stud approves an improvment to his cellar because the ceiling is now high enough to accommodate the flight of a decent sized bull whip. Cracking stuff!

So I could not put the read down. Would I read more from Lucy Pireel? Yes, definitely. So there you have it. I couldn't stop reading and would read more.

Couldn't put it down!

From the start of this story, you could tell that Raphael was a Dominate. But I was unsure of if Amelia was a Submissive or not. As the story first progressed, you could see the sparks between Amelia and Raphael.

One thing that I did really enjoy about this book was the fact that Raphael and Amelia didn't just jump into bed together. You could watch their relationship start out as co-workers and then slowly progress to more. Another thing that I really enjoyed about this book is that for a brief time, you were able to see a Domme play with her sub. That is not something that you see a lot of in BDSM type writing.

Overall I would recommend this book to my friends!

About the Author
Cheryl A. Cage began Cage Consulting, Inc. in 1988. Over 100,000 pilots have used the Interview Preparation and Career Planning products and services of Cage Consulting. Cheryl is the author of five aviation career books including the bestselling Checklist for Success: A Pilot’s Guide to the Successful Airline Interview (with over 50,000 copies sold). In addition to her work with individual clients, Cheryl served as an independent consultant for many corporate clients such as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Northwest Airlines, and unions including the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

In 1996, Cheryl developed and presented pilot interview preparation seminars to thousands of displaced ALPA pilots from Pan Am, Midway, US Airways, TWA, Air Wisconsin, West Air, and Aspen Airways to name a few. The publishing division of Cage Consulting was expanded in 1996 with several new titles included. Another success story. Get it if youre applying for Majors, hold off if you're going for the regionals.

Well, what can I say. This book got me a job at a Major. I have no doubt in my mind that the preparation from this book was the difference between me getting the job and not. Cheryl's advice is well structured and right on the money. Buying this book is like going to one of her seminars, except much much cheaper.

I bought the book before I had an interview, and that is definitely the way to go. There are many preparation techniques that will take some time. I would recommend getting this book as soon as you are applying for majors. The day that you get "the call" it will be too late. Use the techniques and prep provided in the book, and you will go to your interview with confidence. Trust the advice given here, its all golden.

One caveat I will give is that you probably don't need this if you're going for a regional interview. With the current environment you can probably save yourself a few bucks and get the job anyway. However, if you've gone to a few regional interviews, and are wondering why you haven't gotten then job, then read this book. It will definitely help you figure out what you are "doing wrong." She even discusses how to overcome various difficulties to your record.

I thought this would be full of exclusive tips for Airline interview success; but you can find the same information in about 30 minutes of surfing the internet. Not a complete waste of money, but investing $20 on Aviationinterviews.com has proven more worthwhile to me.

Stunning debut!

What a captivating debut novel from Ms DeLeo.

A classic marriage of convenience with a twist! Set in Auckland, the story of Christo and Ruby bubbles with emotion. The sexual tension vibrates between them from page one.

A pregnant Ruby has returned to Auckland to bury her mother. She craves to give her child the stability she never had in the home that has been in her family for generations. Christo wants nothing more than to give his mother the house she's called home for forty years. The catch? They must live together, battling building emotion and their obvious attraction to each other. They agree to the marriage so both can have their dreams. Both hurt by each other in the past they battle their building physical attraction, but in a hot, hot scene they give into temptation. But among the simmering tensions is the realization that Ruby is falling in love with Christo, a man who has vowed never to fall under Ruby's spell again.

Christo is hot! A pure alpha-male. Ruby is strong yet vulnerable. They both struggle to trust each other under the sparkling backdrop of Auckland.

I was captivated by Ruby and Christo's story.

Refreshing Romance

Ruby's mother has passed away and she has returned to her childhood home for the funeral. Ruby is pregnant and the father of her baby is deceased. She plans to stay and raise her baby in her family's home. Christo, her mothers housekeeper's son and the man Ruby once fell in love with, returns only to let her know half of the estate was left to him, and he has no plans of giving up his portion. Christo feels his mother deserves to live there, since it was her home, too. After finding out Ruby is pregnant, Christo offers her marriage, and a place to raise her baby with a father, and grandmother.

While reading this story, I thought to myself that if I was Ruby you probably wouldn't have to twist my arm into that situation, sounds like a pretty nice deal. Not to mention Christo is the complete package- tall, dark, and handsome and he has more money than he knows what to do with. The sexual tension is present from the moment Ruby and Christo reunite. Ruby is not happy with her predicament, and she is not sure if she can risk her heart once again with Christo. As I got to know the characters and background story a little more, I understood Ruby's stubbornness and hesitance. The writing and plot are unique and the author's use of imagery was sharp and captivating. I wish there was a little more character development, maybe a flashback or two to let you know how more about what actually happened from both Ruby and Christos' POV.

This book is perfect for anyone looking for a refreshing romance with a unique story. It will not disappoint!

Not that good

After her mother's death, Ruby moves back home to New Zealand (a place she ran from many years before.) She is pregnant and alone. The father of her baby, although they were not together anyway, had died in a car accident.

Enter Christo, a man who she felt betrayed her love many years before. He was her family's maid's son turned company man - more money than he knew what to do with now. He wants to buy her childhood home (the only thing she has left from her family.) And she soon learns her mother has already willed half of it to him.

As Christo & Ruby battle over ownership of the house, they also learn more about what tore them apart years before. Then they have a choice to make...should they stay together & both keep the house?

It wasn't so uninteresting that I couldn't finish the book but yet I can't say I really liked it either. I didn't feel a good connection between Christo & Ruby. It wasn't realistic. (While I liked Ruby's character, I didn't like Christo. It felt like he tolerated Ruby just to be able to father her unborn child. I found myself not even sure if I wanted them together at the end.) Story line was ok but I guess I feel like it could have been handled better.

About the Author
Louise Tamblin has many years' experience in adult education having taught with Thames Valley University, the Open University and acted as an external examiner with the Royal College of Nursing. She is skilled in designing educational programmes and assessments, authoring distance-learning materials and undertaking and applying research.

Pat Ward has designed and delivered e-learning for over a decade, in both the education and corporate sectors. She has also run staff development programmes at universities around the world, advised government agencies and blue chip companies on assessment strategies, and is currently developing e-facilitated programmes to promote successful learning among adult learners.
