What is beautiful about this book... is the widespread integration of theimaging and classic pathology of the same entity. Not only does one get a deep sense of the underlying causes of the familiar imaging findings,but one is also educated in virtually all aspects of the disease, in the bullet point format...Added to this, of course, just as with everyother disease, are the key areas to understand, such as the terminologyused; the etiology and pathogenesis; clinical issues/concerns, including treatment; imaging (which, by the nature of these books, is not theprimary focus); macroscopic pathology; microscopic pathology (the keypart); other valuable tests; and differential diagnosis from a pathologic point view. ...We see a number of clinical (ie, patient) images; so if you want to seewhat a gingival Kaposi sarcoma or a discord lupus looks like, you can. The book is full of such examples and makes studying each entity farmore interesting. Drs. Thisis an update of an in-depth book on non-neoplastic, benign, and malignant headand neck lesions. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose
Thepurpose is to provide a reference with reliable and updated information on allaspects of head and neck lesions, which the authors have done.
Audience
Itis intended primarily for pathologists and pathology residents in training. Theauthors and contributors are all pathologists, some of whom trained me. Thebook also may be used as a reference for a broad spectrum of medicalpractitioners including, but not limited to, head and neck surgeons,oncologists, and radiologists with an interest in head and neck disease.
Features
Thebook's more than 1,100 pages are organized into sections covering the nasalcavity and paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx and trachea, oral cavity,salivary glands, jaw, ear and temporal bone, neck, thyroid gland, andparathyroid glands. Each section begins with normal histology and anatomy ofthe site, followed by non-neoplastic lesions, benign neoplasms, and malignanttumors. The key facts and initial gallery of photographs enable the book's useas a quick reference. Different diseases are presented in a highly structuredand bulleted format that includes definitions, etiology, clinical anddemographic parameters, treatment and prognosis, imaging findings, pathologicalfeatures, ancillary studies, and differential diagnoses. The quality of mostgross and microscopic images is excellent. The book also has useful tables thatsummarize important immunohistochemical findings of different neoplasms. Theindex is user friendly.

Assessment
This may become one of the top resources for pathologists with an interest in head and neck lesions. Since the previous edition, new entities have been described and more molecular tests developed, and I washappy to see these discussed. The bulleted format makes the book user friendlyin a busy practice.
The graphics and schematic drawings are extraordinarily well done and will prove to be very helpful for teaching purposes. Thephotomicrographs are of excellent quality and at times the well-placed arrows helpto explain the points the authors are trying to convey. I personally appreciatethe discussion (again in bulleted format) in the differential diagnosis sectioninstead of just a list. This will be a great addition to departmental andpersonal libraries.

I think the book is very complete and your approach is similar (but more detailed) to the project management approach that Roger Pressman and I followed in our general software engineering text (so I agree with it). Your coverage is very complete and I agree with the sequencing of topics. The writing is very accessible to upper level undergraduate students and to masters students.

The narrator is an elderly cleric in a small parish "in the neglected center of a city of considerable size" somewhere in Europe, in some indeterminate time; the story of St. Julian once brought the cleric out of despair, and he is anxious to tell it himself for the masses, for Julian is "the Saint of them that have sinned uncommonly, whether by heart or by hand." Born in medieval Europe to a noble family, Julian has blood lust from a young age. As a teenager, he goes hunting purely for the ecstasy of the kill. One day a stag, dying at his hand, prophesies that Julian will murder his own parents. Julian flees his home in terror of the prophesy, becomes a brutal warrior and takes a wife. While he is away pillaging, his parents come to his castle. His wife receives them warmly and unwittingly offers them her bed. When Julian comes home the stag's prediction reaches its inevitable, tragic fulfillment. In his grief, Julian becomes a beggar, seeking degradation in every form and doing good works for the poor, which include building a hospice and inns. The story is beautifully written, in a style that is formal without being overly lyrical or stagily archaic. The fable-like narrative won't be for everyone, but those interested in the lives of the saints will enjoy this imaginative tale.

Les Miserables, anime version.

This is a book I wanted to like, but the more I read, the faster I read, just to be done with it. It struck me as Les Mis, done in anime. The various faces of Julian are stark and narrowly drawn, with so little transition between faces and little insight into his being that one can scarcely reconcile one image with the other, let alone see some internal transition toward repentance. The narrator was little more than a cardboard cutout propped up by a few cursory claims of faith.

Still, Wangerin's talent pops out sporadically, enough that I'd try another book of his. But with this one, I was left with the feeling that Wangerin simply did not take the time to write as he seems capable of writing.

Medeval, Christian, and a Man, a Hunter of the forest.

"Saint Julian", by Walter Wangerin Jr., is now 4 years old but I'm glad I came across it. It's a good fictional story of a man who would become a Saint. He is the finest hunter of all time, and becomes the greatest knight of all time, and then life takes it's toll with him. He falls into poverty, somewhat by his own design, but is Sainted because of his unfailing devotion to helping those in need, even to the very end of his breath. He bestows mercy.

The story of Saint Julian (aka: Red Knight, Ferryman) is told by a minor cleric who is being tested by his own aging but faithful in researching all he can find on the life of Julian for preservation. He learns of the curse put upon Julian, finds the facts, and records them for the reader.

Frequently, a sentence is placed in Latin, sometimes rephrased in English, sometimes not. It adds a bit of color to the telling, even if the translation is missing.

This is not a typical Medieval tale. Here's a book that should not be overlooked by male readers.

In the Grip of Addictive Sin

Wangerin has done a powerful job describing the effects of sin in a life that's not totally given over to Christ. Julian typifies the believer whose belief is only through cultural heritage and not a heart change. This book chronicles the depths that sin will take us...to the end of our very self, where Christ will be waiting after we ineffectively try to deal with all our shame and self loathing. It occurs to me that the problem is addiction and the recovery process is through Christ alone. This book had the same effect on me as Frank Perreti's book "The Oath". Very convicting. Well worth the read.

About the Author

David J. Drucker, MBA, CFP®, has more than thirty years of experience in the financial services industry. Beneficial; just different than their prior book.

Dave Drucker and Joel Bruckenstein are two of the "go to" people when financial planners want to know what is what with technology for their practice. Their monthly newsletter is pretty much a gotta have for firms that want to keep track of changes of all things related to using technology (both hardware and software) to run one's business well.

The challenge with writing a book on technology is that much of the advice may be outdated by the time that the book is ready for sale. In my opinion, this is why much of their advice is delivered through seminars and through a monthly e-newsletter format. What this book does is offer a survey course on issues and areas of concern for those who are not already familiar with their work and who want to get a ground level survey of what is out there and what needs to be considered. This book would be especially beneficial to those who are newer to running their own practice or have not invested much in technology over the last few years and are due for an upgrade and update.

This book differs a bit from what I had expected which was a detailed analysis of what programs to consider and why. Instead, as explained by Dave in the preface, and summarized by Joel in the epilogue, they reached out to their FOPs (friends of planners) to have specialists in different areas write about what they know well. Given this format, almost a "seminar in a book", it allows the reader to pick and choose what subject interests them. Just like conference presentations though, the quality of each chapter varies significantly. Some were excellent and some left me wondering what was the point of this chapter? And, as one would expect, the authors of the chapters sometimes presented their viewpoint with a bias towards their selected resources. Some widely used products were given less coverage than some less robust applications, but all in all, Dave and Joel did a decent job of attempting to provide information, not sales pitches.

For disclosure, our firm is a leading edge technology user. I am a tech geek who likes being a financial planner more than I like being a techie. If you are already familiar with Dave and Joel's work, then you probably do not need to add this book to your reading stack. On the other hand, if you just want to learn more about different areas, like the cloud, and social media, and where tech for planners has been and is likely to go, then this is a solid addition to your reference library. But, do yourself a favor. Make sure that you buy the book AND read it soon, otherwise you will have additional catching up research to do.

A disappointment

Compared to their first book, quite a let down. Where their first book applied to the solo practice advisor. This seems to be written for the larger firm. Hell, its really written by others anyway! Where as their first book shaped my practice. I can't think of any take-away's from this one.

Not as useful as the first book.

Having read the first "Technology Tools" years ago, I was excited to see a new release. Sadly, this book is more of a compilation of industry writers rehashing information that has been previously published in industry magazines or online. Some chapters felt a bit (product) biased based on the point of view of the writer. Since I am an avid reader of financial advisor technology articles, there was little new information. Also, the first book contained many direct recomendations whereas this one gives general overviews without much actionable information.

Mikel Harry and Richard Schroeder think they've figured out a management program that really works. While at Motorola in the 1980s, they helped pioneer Six Sigma, a process that "guides companies into making fewer mistakes in everything they do--from filling out a purchase order to manufacturing airplane engines." Since then, the two have left Motorola and have turned Six Sigma into a lucrative business that saw over $100 million in consulting contracts in 1998. And now the book.

In Six Sigma: The Breakthrough Management Strategy Revolutionizing the World's Top Corporations, Harry and Schroeder explain Six Sigma and show how it's working at companies such as General Electric, Polaroid, and Allied Signal. The authors contend that most companies today are working at a "sigma" level of between 3.5 and 4, and that with just a one-sigma shift, companies will experience "a 20 percent margin improvement, a 12 to 18 percent increase in capacity, a 12 percent reduction in the number of employees," as well as "a 10 to 30 percent capital reduction." Sigma is a quality metric that counts the number of defects per million opportunities (DPMO). For example, a sigma level of 3.5 means that a process has 22,700 DPMO; a sigma level of 4.5, 1,350 DPMO; and a perfect six sigma, 3 DPMO.

At the heart of Six Sigma is the notion that quality saves money--lots of money. Harry and Schroeder argue that for most companies "the cost of quality is roughly 25 to 40 percent of sales revenue ... at six sigma the cost of quality declines to less than one percent of sales revenue." The idea is not to create quality-assurance programs but to eliminate the need for them altogether. When a company is operating at six sigma, costs that would otherwise go to inspection, rework, warranties, and customer service drop to the bottom line. Six Sigma is a compelling concept that many companies have tied their futures to. A Well-Written Appetizer but No Entree Included

A well-written book that gives insight into what 'Six Sigma' is all about - a change strategy for relentlessly driving defects out of your products, processes and services to increase profitability. It's about leadership and a structured, data-based approach to problem solving. Having been a Wave 1 Black Belt at AlliedSignal during the launch of Six Sigma, I can verify that the Breakthrough methodology (DMAIC)really does work. For those of you who have been through numerous 'TQ initiatives' and countless SPC campaign with no real impact on business performance, the case studies presented in this book are enlightening.
On the negative side, for those who want a complete A to Z textbook on how to implement Six Sigma in their own organization, prepare to be disappointed. No information is provided on the statistical tools that go hand-in-hand with the DMAIC roadmap (I guess the Six Sigma Academy can't give away all their secrets).
In summary, thumbs up if you want an overview and real-life examples of what Six Sigma is all about. Thumbs down in you want a detailed textbook or reference book on the subject.

From my prespective, readers who purchase a book on Six Sigma are somehow experienced on Quality processes and want to learn more on the topic. However, this book is a total dissapointemet, as it is more of advertisement than knowlege. The author could have written ten pages to describe what was said on 281 pages! All that was written were Black Belts, how vital were they to the process. No emphasis on the Six Segma process, no description of the mechanism from an engineering prespective. It is more of 'Six Segma is the best and we can deliver the impossible' approach! For me this could be a good Novel to read, not for serious Managers.

About the Author
Bill James made his mark in the 1970s and 1980s with his Baseball Abstracts. He has been tearing down preconceived notions about America's national pastime ever since. He is currently the Senior Advisor on Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox. James lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with his wife, Susan McCarthy, and three children.

Rob Neyer has written about baseball for ESPN.com since 1996 and appears regularly on ESPNews. He has written four baseball books, including The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers (with Bill James) and Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Lineups. Major Disappointment

I enjoy most of Mr. James' books, though they can drive you up the wall sometimes like Win Shares, which would have been nice to be more in an encyclopedia format (players careers alphabetically). I never really cared what pitches were thrown by what pitchers, especially by no names from say 1926. Mr. Neyer's 'Big Book of Baseball Lineups" and Mr. James' Historical Aspects are fine, but this book is getting trivial (wow we looked at September 1945 Baseball magazine and they said Emmett O'Neill threw this or whatever). Who really cares. This is like Bill James' Stats Handbook and Source Books published back in the late 90's. They were monstrosities of too much useless info. I hope that their next collaboration is more interesting and inspiring.

Don't buy the Kindle version!!

The kindle version is missing a majority of the "Pitcher's Census" portion of the book. It stops at the "B's". Calling Amazon support got it refunded, but the support rep didn't sound as if this issue would be resolved.

So basically, don't buy the kindle version. You wouldn't buy a real book with pages missing, would you?

An underrated and terrific book

I judge a book not by what it doesn't have, but what it DOES have. And this book has all the things you'd expect in another great book from Bill James or Rob Neyer.

It has information you can't find anywhere else and probably never thought you could. Where else could you find accounts of exactly HOW all these pitchers pitched, all in one volume? It's the result of a decade of research by the two authors and their assistants.

In additional to the basic information, there are the usual essays, plus the usual Bill James digressions and asides. It's all very well organized. There's no trouble knowing where to find what you want.

And, as usual, it makes you THINK, and it makes you realize things that are relevant not just to baseball but to everything. One of the opening chapters focuses on how much the subject depends on linguistics and vocabulary, and how we might think a source tells us something but it doesn't really, because we don't understand the meanings of the words and phrases that are being used. Usually this is because the language has evolved over time, but sometimes it's because the language is used arbitrarily or sloppily. This is true about "knuckleballs" and "sliders" and "curves." But we readily realize that it can apply to anything.

The introductory chapter includes some duelling between the authors about things, some of which would seem to be "facts" but which are hard to pin down. It's interesting to see how much remains debatable about such a seemingly straightforward subject, even after years of research, and how much it will forever be arguable.

Especially interesting is the material about how the mechanics and strategy of pitching have evolved over the years, and WHY. In most instances there were specific reasons and fairly clear dividing lines for the major changes.

My one criticism would be that the content is indeed a bit erratic. One of the book's purposes is to catalog any noteworthy idiosyncrasies of a pitcher's style. But I notice that on some of the guys with the very most famous idiosyncrasies, you find nothing or almost nothing. For example, there's nothing about what Al Hrabosky was famous for, and almost nothing about Luis Tiant's hilarious mannerisms.

Still.....highly recommended for Bill James/Rob Neyer fans, and for anybody who enjoys interesting baseball material that's unlike what you've ever seen.
