Book covers it all

This one book covers all the units and their campaigns during WW 2. Lots of pictures are a plus. The commanders and many aircraft used are detailed. The reader will get a good understanding of the Japanese air force and the number of shoy down aircraft claimed by this service is amazing. Reader also get a view of where each numbered air force fought at.

Finally a book detailing the lives and exploits of those brave men who flew for the Japanese Army Air Forces. What comes across most clearly is the waste of war, of lives with such potential cut short. Fascinating photos and intriguing information.

This handsome, detailed book lifts the curtain on the Japanese army units that fought in China, Southeast Asia, and the home islands during World War II. It's based on a Japanese-language text by a noted historian and an aviation buff, and rendered into workable English by the British historian Christopher Shores. The result is a much more accessible book than the earlier one by the same Japanese authors about the larger Japanese navy air force. There are many photos, side-views of JAAF fighters, accounts of the major campaigns, biographies of the aces (happily arranged in alphabetical order so you can quickly look them up), and an appendix listing every major air combat and every JAAF pilot lost in 15 years of war. A solid book that belongs in the library of every serious student of the Pacific War. -- Dan Ford

You'll need the Errata and Git

Seems that the code examples in the book have problems, which means the examples you're reading have errors. You'll want to refer to the actual working examples on github.

Additionally, be forewarned that Kindle Reader software screws with copy'n'paste -- both in that it doesn't treat spaces and spaces AND that it appends the book information as well. Bottom line, if you think you're going to copy'n'paste example code or commands, you're going to be HIGHLY frustrated.

Best D3 book so far!

I have read quite a few books / tutorials on D3.js, and this is by far the best. It is concise, thorough, and doesn't waste time on stupid things that most readers already know. If you want to learn to code your own visualizations in D3 instead of simply reusing others' code, then get this book now -- it covers essential things that are not easily learnt elsewhere, and in a very systematic way, despite being called a "cookbook".

This is it!

There are tons of free tutorials and books out on the web, but none of them match the depth and richness of this Cookbook. The author explains the concepts really well and the code examples are concise and pretty awesome. If you want to dig deeper and really understand D3.js, this book is the best resource.

The first five chapters deal with the basics (selection, data binding, scales, axes). Even if you've never heard of D3, I think you can manage to get through quite well. Next in line are Transitions, SVG, Charts and Layouts where again the explanations but also the great code examples drive the point home. In the last third of the chapter more advanced topics like interaction, force, maps and even testing (!) are discussed.

If you either want to get started with D3.js or are already intermediate or even a ninja, this book will serve you well as an entry point, a medium for further development or a reference guide.

Interesting approach to family constellation but the spelling mistakes are far too many. Same paragraphs are repeated and it's quite annoying to read. I'd suggest that before putting out a book for sale to first make the necessary corrections.

Good book, but doesn't really move the universe forward.

Coruscant nights is a new series within the star wars universe and it seems to contradict several things we know. Darth Vader was supposed to have killed all the Jedi except for Obi Wan(who he kills later) and Yoda(who dies of being 900 years old). Jax Paravan is running around alive and well however. Aside from that Jax also seems to have awesome thwarting Darth Vader powers despite Darth Vader being the strongest Jedi of all time. The numerous escapes seem reasonable enough the first few times, but eventually they add up and start to resemble plot armor. The story also seems a little pointless as nothing happens that will later impact the events of a New Hope, and Jax's victory seems extremely Pyrrhic. The writing style itself is of high quality, but the story line seems to amount to Jax staging daring escapes and rescue operations, but ultimately ending up worse than he started while Darth Vader marches around with the villain ball loudly declaring his own superiority and showing a lot of insecurity with his choice to fall to the dark side. Xizor head of Black Sun makes an appearance and those parts of the book are very entertaining and well done. Maybe the author was told he couldn't affect the main story line of the star wars universe. It is understandable, but unfortunate if that is the case. On the other hand maybe the series will continue and eventually have some sort of important effect for the eventual formation of the rebellion.

The welcome return of Jax Pavan and friends

I was pleasantly surprised when The Last Jedi was announced. Michael Reaves had penned the Coruscant Nights series a couple of years earlier and like many sci-fi/fantasy projects, it appeared to be a trilogy. Jax Pavan survived the pivotal encounter with Darth Vader at the end of Patterns of Force, so a sequel was certainly possible, but I didn't expect it to actually materialize. Here Mr. Reaves works with Maya Kaathryn Bohnoff to offer what is essentially Coruscant Nights IV, even though it is not titled as such. Kudos to Del Rey for allowing this story to continue.

Darth Vader's fate at the end of Coruscant Nights III was unclear to Jax Pavan, although we as readers know he is certainly still kicking around. Jax has been continuing to work with Whiplash and his allies from the first three books: notably, Sullustan journalist Den Dhur, the remarkably self-aware droid I-Five, and his Twi'lek partner Laranth are all still at Jax's side as the book begins. It's compelling how Mr. Reaves has managed to bring elements of his prequel-era stories forward through his many novels: for example, the bota from the Medstar duology playing a role in Patterns of Force and the shifty Sakiyan Tuden Sal, first encountered in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, now leading Whiplash. The story of the Pavan family and I-Five, along with their contemporaries, has become quite its own sideshow in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I-Five in particular has had a fascinating journey through his decades of existence and in this book his growing self-awareness hits new heights.

The Last Jedi finally reveals the secrets from the Sith holocron which debuted in the Maul novel. I always get uncomfortable when the concept of non-linear time is introduced in a Star Wars novel, as kicking open the door to time travel will invalidate all existing stories, including the films themselves. Flow-walking in Legacy of the Force and the Dark Nest trilogy trod dangerously close to stepping over that line. In The Last Jedi, the authors have cameos from a Cephalon who can perceive time in a non-linear, broadly encompassing fashion, but the Cephalon's statements are so cryptic that characters are generally unable to use the information effectively. More intriguingly, the holocron contains a secret to bending time within it. Again, I wasn't sure that was something I wanted to see introduced in a Star Wars story, but it is rendered in a clever way and also made irrelevant by the end of the story. The interesting impact the time-bending had on the climactic battle justified the authors playing around with this concept: no harm done to the universe storyline as a whole.

The book hops around the galaxy in true Star Wars fashion, including stops at familiar worlds Mandalore and Dathomir (Dathomir seems to be undergoing quite the EU resurgence since playing a prominent role in the Clone Wars TV show). A Whiplash plot to remove Emperor Palpatine from power also brings Coruscant back into the picture. The early days of the Empire are a fascinating period, one still rife with storytelling opportunity, and so it's enjoyable when The Last Jedi follows the efforts of Whiplash to take out the Empire's head even when Pavan and his friends are not in the scenes. The tension between the Whiplash leaders, in particular Tuden Sal and police prefect Pol Haus, is well-illustrated and makes them much more interesting than they would be if they were all in perfect alignment on their goals. The period where the Emperor is consolidating power, Vader is brand-new on the job, and the galaxy is stabilizing after the Clone Wars is one in which I imagine people would be very confused about their future direction and choices, and the authors portray this well with the splintered leadership of Whiplash.

The Last Jedi could be read as a standalone novel and the lack of linkage on the cover to the earlier series (beyond pictures of the three Coruscant Nights books) indicates that Del Rey is comfortable marketing it that way. However, I recommend starting with Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, moving on to the Medstar duology, and then reading the Coruscant Nights trilogy before tackling The Last Jedi. The story connections and character development spanning these seven novels make for an entertaining micro-saga in the larger story of the galaxy far, far away.

A Fun Little Adventure

The Last Jedi is kind of interesting. It's a sequel, of sorts, to the Coruscant Nights trilogy (which I loved), but tells a story somewhat separate from those. I enjoyed the book on the whole, but knowing all of the other things surrounding it (like the fact that the's far from the Last Jedi) seems to take a bit of the tension out of it.

It was very neat seeing their plan come together however, as well as seeing the new acolytes that Darth Vader has at his command. I'm just hoping they do something more with this character in future books. I'd love to see what happens to him by the Original Trilogy Era.

The story is essentially a rescue mission, and it doesn't veer much from that. The characterization played through fairly well, and the author did a great job showing the character's feelings and thought-process behind the possibility of him being the last Jedi left in the galaxy. It could have easily become melodramatic and cliche, but they managed to keep it interesting and engaging.

The Outcast

The author begins with an introduction giving a broad summery of his intentions for books in this universe. It helps understand what could appear to be a lack of cohesion between the various volumes.

While I did enjoy this book, I'm not sure I would place this at the top of my favorites for the series. The overall story (and tie-in) is interesting, as are a few of the characters, and I generally agree with the author's soap-box. But somewhere around 70%, I just lost interest. Hard to pin down exactly why, but I think I felt that the book was just taking too long to go somewhere. I peeked at the last few pages, which prompted me to continue on. Around 90%, my interest was piqued enough to get me going again.

Editing is improved. The notes I made were mainly relegated to punctuation, and more towards things like missing or spurious quotes, commas and the like. There is a frustrating use of the construct "nothing, but", used often enough to pick up on. One example:

"that nothing would be left, but a handful of low-tech worlds. She told herself that was an exaggerated fear, but in truth she didn't know."

The first "but" is a preposition, and needs no comma. It is followed by a restrictive clause, and bounded by a comma, is meaningless. The second "but" is a conjunction, which is where one normally uses commas.

I'm not one of "those" who debates the proper usage of "lain vs. laid" (which is just pretentious), but neither am I picking nits; incorrect or erroneous punctuation can profoundly change the meaning of a sentence, either becoming ambiguous ("Sameena stopped, dead"; I doubt she is dead, but rather came to a dead stop) or introducing nonsensical phrases.

The story ends with some interesting possibilities to develop, so I will look for another volume in the series.

Could not put it down!

While part of the Empire's Corps series, this is certainly a stand alone book. I could not put it down, the story line grabbed me from the first page and held me through until I finished it. It deals with a different backwater than the other books, and the main characters are the traders, basically tramp starships that carry cargo and people. Fleeing her planet she is rescued by such a starship and becomes a trader. A smart young lady, she sees that trade is collapsing and the empire is failing to protect the shipping lines. So, what can she do about that? And that is what the book is about. More please!

While I have thoroughly enjoyed the preceding volumes of this series, the "coming of age" story has long been a personal favorite.

In a, "coming of age," story, a boy or girl encounters various trials and tribulations and, perhaps with the help of some good mentoring, learns how to be a successful man or woman. As with Heinlein's, "Citizen of the Galaxy," the young person is thrust into a culture entirely alien to their own.

About the Author
Nació en Santiago de Cuba, una ciudad más negra que blanca, compleja, descomplicada y bullanguera, acunada por las lomas de la Sierra Maestra y mecida por el ardiente Mar Caribe. Siendo muy joven se trasladó a Estados Unidos, donde terminó su educación secundaria y universitaria, y ya adulta Ilegó a Cali, Colombia, donde ha trabajado y vivido desde entonces, y donde aspira a vivir hasta el final. Desde 1972 es profesora de la Universidad del Valle; alli contribuyó a fundar y dirigió por varios años el Centro de Estudios de Género, Mujer y Sociedad, donde aún labora. Ha publicado cuatro volúmenes de poesía y cinco libros de ensayos, y ha compilado varios libros de ensayos sobre género. Esta es la segunda edición de su primera novela. Tiene una segunda novela, Jalisco pierde en Cali (2015).

Me encantó este libro. Es una novela histórica que se desarrolla en Cuba en la década de los cincuenta durante la caída de Batista y la toma de poder de Fidel Castro. La protagonista, Alejandra, vive su despertar sexual en medio de este mundo político conflictivo. Los dioses afro-cubanos (orichas) se entrometen en este mundo socio-político para abogar por sus propios intereses personales, al igual que lo hacían los dioses griegos en la Atenas mitológica de la antigüedad. Me divertí cantidades leyendo este libro y aprendí mucho sobre esta fascinante época histórica.

I loved this book! It's a historical fiction novel which takes place in Cuba in the 50s during the fall of Batista and the rise of Fidel Castro. The protagonist, Alejandra, experiences her sexual awakening in the midst of this conflictive political world. The Afro-Cuban gods (Orishas) meddle in this socio-political world to push their own personal agendas, much like the Greek gods did in the ancient mythical Athens. I had a blast reading it and learned so much about this fascinating historical time.

This Spanish-language novel tells the story of a girl coming of age in Santiago de Cuba, the cradle of the Revolution against Batista. The author is faithful to the historical characters that played key roles in the Revolution and to the major events of this era. But the women are the center of the narrative. It's about a girl growing up in uncertain times. There's enough action and the author pulls no punches when it comes to things like war and torture and portrays very vividly the feelings of the people of this city that took the brunt of Batista’s dictatorship. But not all is gloom and doom. The obvious love of the author for her native city coming through this novel and some funny episodes regarding the santería gods give emotional relief from the intensity of the action.
I thoroughly recommend it.

About the Author

David Kroenke has many years of teaching experience at Colorado State University, Seattle University, and the University of Washington. He has led dozens of seminars for college professors on the teaching of information systems and technology; in 1991, the International Association of Information Systems named him Computer Educator of the Year. In 2009, David was named Educator of the Year by the Association of Information Technology Professionals-Education Special Interest Group (AITP-EDSIG).

 

David worked for the U.S. Air Force and Boeing Computer Services. He was a principal in the startup of three companies, serving as the vice president of product marketing and development for the Microrim Corporation and as chief of database technologies for Wall Data, Inc. He is the father of the semantic object data model. David’s consulting clients have included IBM, Microsoft, and Computer Sciences Corporations, as well as numerous smaller companies. Recently, David has focused on using information systems for teaching collaboration and teamwork.

 

His text Database Processing was first published in 1977 and is now in its 13th edition. He has authored and coauthored many other textbooks, including Database Concepts, 7th ed. (2015), Experiencing MIS, 7th ed. (2017), SharePoint for Students (2012), Office 365 in Business (2012), and Processes, Systems, and Information: An Introduction to MIS, 2nd ed. (2015).

 

Randall J. Boyle received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Florida State University in 2003. He also has a master’s degree in Public Administration and a B.S. in Finance. He has received university teaching awards at Longwood University, the University of Utah, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has taught a wide variety of classes including Introduction to MIS, Cyber Security, Networking & Servers, System Analysis and Design, Telecommunications, Advanced Cyber Security, Decision Support Systems, and Web Servers.

 

His research areas include deception detection in computer-mediated environments, secure information systems, the effects of IT on cognitive biases, the effects of IT on knowledge workers, and e-commerce. He has published in several academic journals and has authored several textbooks, including Corporate Computer and Network Security, 4th ed., Applied Information Security, 2nd ed., and Applied Networking Labs, 2nd ed.

Advice to anyone looking to rent to save money. My other eBooks allowed me to use on all my devices. I often switch from desktop to laptop, to iPhone. I wasn't able to read chapters on the go without deleting it from my current device then re-downloading on to the other. Something to think about if you thought this eBook would bring convenience. Additionally, Kindle can read this book but only by using native speaking software. Other eBooks I have read sections naturally.

Great if your not a tech person

Not a tech person by any means. This was very, very well written. It's super simplified and very practical. Glad I brought it instead of renting so I can reference it in the future.

Got a brand new book in speedy time. Used this for an intro to information systems class. Well set up with page numbers next to vocabulary words and a summary at the end of each chapter.
