I bought this book months ago. Now I can't even pass through chapter three. The book seems like being designed for experienced programmers who want to pick up what they know before because the detailed stuffs are all omitted. I originally expected the source code is the starting point and the book guide me to build a completed one but it's a completed version of what he talks about.

Willful disregard for the bits that matter

Bought this to try and provide more help compared with what the Apple Docs give. Big disappointment. Starts off by explaining that the entire book is based on a single app that they have included on their website for ease of download and will be the underlying app used throughout. Unfortunately this app, the keystone of the rest of the book, simply doesn't work. In the span of 15 minutes, had to debug 4 errors, 3 of which I solved, until the Core data NSManagedObject/Entity types started to trip me up. Started reading-- the book-to-downloaded-code looks almost nothing alike. They leave out vast swaths of code explanation in the book compared to what's in the actual (unworkable) downloaded code. For reference, there seems to be at least 3 updates to the book, and the code since its development. Yes, I understand Swift is evolving, but seriously, other Swift books I've bought continue to be incredibly useful, despite changes in the language-- the errors that the book/code here have seem pretty basic, and for even THOSE to fail is just shameful. What a complete waste of time AND money. The book also simply skips over large amounts of conceptual info in favor of select parts the author deems suitable for explanation. The whole point of this book was to supplement the Apple docs, this leaves out just as many pieces as the docs do, making it completely ineffective. Avoid.

Not Detailed Enough...

I have tried read through this book several times and the detailed information is just way to sparse. The book does a good job of covering the topics of core, but at a weird high level - detailed level.

What I mean by that is the author has a fairly large application that he uses as an example. He pulls small snapshots of code from the larger context and uses that to explain a concept. There really is no introduction to Core Data, it is more of an introduction to the application where it uses Core Data.

Although I may come back to it later, for now it is on the shelf.
