A Fine Collection and a Superb Translation

I am so delighted by this book. The poetry is by authors such as Ludwig Tieck, Franz Clemens Brentano, Josef Von Eichendorf, Novalis, and more. These are some of the finest authors of that lush period known as "Romantic Literature" to have to have there works assembled here. Moreover, the translations are excellent, and the English and German is set side by side in a very practical-sized type, making it extremely comfortable to read and enjoy. I should mention that the book is a sturdy paper back, much better than average, so it's more durable when schlepping it around to and from campus. I would recommend this collection not only to students of German Romantic Literature, but also to those studying English Literature, as writers from both periods were very influenced by each other. This might make for some wonderfully interesting topics for papers your papers. I highly recommend this book for English students or students of German that are studying the Romantic Period.

Nice collection.

This is a nice collection of poetry, which I bought solely for the German, not the translated, poetry. The translations are usually pretty good, faithful to the language and the feeling of the original poem--as much as possible with a translation, of course. There were a few poems where I felt that the English word-choice was not what I would have chosen, and that another would have conveyed the flavor of the English word better, or, less often, that the change in the word-order, while making the poem read more "English," was not the word order I would have used. Nonetheless, for the selection of poetry alone, I give this collection 4 stars. It would probably be a nice gift for a high school student studying German (who enjoys poetry), particularly since adolescence is the perfect time of life to be reading the Romantics, which resonate well with the highs and lows of the teenage years! It would also be nice for someone who studied German years ago, but hasn't read it in a while, since the English side of the text can provide a bit of help when the meaning of a word or two escapes. It's also not a bad choice if you just want to read some German poetry and are having a hard time finding anything in the original, although it is a very slim volume.

JESUS IN ETHIOPIA BOOK REVIEW

Like a well-crafted mystery story, this book is exciting and an easy read.

From the very beginning the reader is captured by the author. He uses experiences from his own life, experiences common to all of us; to entice us to seek further what this all has to do with Jesus in Ethiopia.

From the very beginning you feel adventure and excitement building as you read further.

The author early on establishes two focuses that sets the foundation for the entire adventure. They are: `On Holy Ground' and `Neglected History'. Again the reader wonders what this all has to do with Jesus in Ethiopia.

The author logically and clearly lays the building blocks as he begins to develop his conclusions based upon research he has done as well as observations and discoveries he experienced in Ethiopia. All of this is clearly documented by photo and/or reference notes.

The Bible student will appreciate the extensive use of Bible Scripture to develop the background for the experiences and discoveries discussed. He also uses Scripture to possibility stretch the reader into new areas.

The `crescendo' at least for this reader was when the author discusses "translating the book" in Chapter 11. I felt the energy building leading to this event. Myself, I read these pages five times in order to completely comprehend what the author was revealing. Not that it was difficult to understand but rather mind boggling to take it all in at one time.

Once all of the information has been disclosed, the author uses a nifty technique of briefly reviewing each piece and how it fits into the bigger picture. He calls it "Putting the Puzzle Together".

I was on the trip and experienced the same things the author did. I can attest to the truthfulness and accuracy of the events and observations described in the book. They happened as the author says.

The author carefully states that "he does not believe in compromising the Word of God in any way, shape or form". But perhaps God has much more to reveal to us opening more revelation to each of us.

He concludes by discussing what these discoveries and revelations mean to him and to everyone who takes the time to consider the worthiness of the evidence presented. He leaves each of us with a challenge.

I close with a concluding quote by the author:
"This has truly been an interesting journey, one of unsuspecting revelation and struggle. No doubt there will be some who question our evidence and rightly so. I was, and still am in some cases, one of those who doubt. As I have heard many say before, until you have been there, felt the hand of God on the journey, seen doors open to clear the path, and felt the joy that comes from following His lead, then I encourage you to at least consider the worthiness of the evidence. Just as I have doubted the opportunity of salvation through Jesus Christ, I am truly joyful that I opened up my eyes and my heart to His eternal assurance. My only regret is that I didn't do that earlier in my life. I pray this analogy enlightens your understanding".

A fun read, but Author lacks sufficient understanding of Ethiopian Christianity, and its unique literature.

In his recent work "Jesus in Ethiopia: The Meeting Between the Father and the Son," American pastor/adventurer/author Jim Rankin does a decent job of introducing some fascinating aspects of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian literature and history. However, Rankin lacks a firm foundation in Ethiopian studies, and Eastern Christian literature. For instance "The Bible" text that Rankin spends many pages discussing is actually an Ethiopian apocryphal manuscript, an important source of local Marian traditions, but not a "Bible" in a strict sense. The text in question is likely what is known as "The Story of Mary," or "The Minor Gospel," or perhaps part of a composite text that contains many Marian texts in a single manuscript. Sometimes the "Miracles of Mary," and "The Story of Mary," as well as portions of other Marian texts are woven together in a single text for festal, liturgical, reading purposes. I don't want to be too hard on Rankin because I don't think he intended his work to be a scholarly account of his "discovery." It is a fun read, and a serious scholar can be introduced to some aspects of the Ethiopian tradition that merit further investigation. If Rankin, or any interested party, were to spend some time with the 10 (plus one that is forthcoming) Volumes of the Ethiopian Manuscript Microfilm Library Catalogues he/she would gain great insight into this subject matter.

Like a scroll unrolling

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Sometimes I have wondered how Jesus spent his childhood, where He traveled, what he did. To think of him in all humility seated before his father being prepared,comforted,and encouraged to do the work that would save the world is, well, inspiring. Jim tells the story with such enthusiasm that I couldn't help but enjoy the entire journey. My copy of the book has already passed to two other readers, and will continue to do so. This book is such a good conversation starter, thanks Jim.

This is excellent. Fogelson comprehensively describes the process by which LA attained its unique character as a city and how the region that surrounds it was affected by its remarkable growth up until 1930, then read this. Some of the sections on bonds and financing are a bit of a slog if you don't have much background in those subjects (I don't). But if you want to get a more nuanced account of why LA abandoned mass rail transit when most other cities embraced it and why so much of the cityscape lacks grace or forethought in layout and design, then I recommend this book. BTW I live here and like the city and find the place endlessly fascinating.

Hey! It's a Classic in Urban History!

Yes, this certainly is a classic in urban history. Fogelson succicently tells the story of Los Angeles, from it's beginnings as a Mexican backwater berg to the enormous Metropolis it became. Fogelson includes chapters on all of the important subjects: L.A. and its Mexican roots, the quest for water, the signifigance of new modes of transportation, the failure of the light water system, the development of the board, the conflict with San Diego, the public utility movement and, of course, the progressive movement.
Fogelson's history is academic in tone, but it's just such concise and well documented writing that you have to love it. A must for readers of Southern California history. I might add that although this was a book about L.A., the chapter on the L.A./SD conflict for Southern California supremacy was actually the best thing I've been able to dig up thus far on San Diego history! How about that, huh?
I might also add that you might want to track down a first edition hardback of this book, rather then paying for this overpriced reprint. The original hardback is handsomely designed and makes a fine edition to your book shelve.

Not for first-time readers of L.A. history

This book is really quite dull and outdated. It's a must-read only for die-hard enthusiasts of L.A. history who want to pick up a few more tidbits. For those with a budding interest, I recommend Blake Gumprect's highly readible and fascinating "The Los Angeles River" or Carey McWilliams' enjoyable "Southern California." If you add William McCawley's "The First Angelinos," Horace Bell's "Reminiscences of a Ranger," and John and LaRee Caughey's "Los Angeles: Biography of a City," you will have a much more well-rounded perspective on L.A. than you will get from Fogelson's book alone. Fogelson's book reads like a cross between popular history and a city planning textbook, yet with none of the interesting aspects of either style.

A funny, irreverent, and politically incorrect collection of fat jokes

Nick Spalding's FAT CHANCE is definitely a funny, irreverent, and politically incorrect look at being fat in the 21st century. Zoe and Greg Milton are an overweight thirty-something couple who agree to participate in a radio show's weight loss competition - they will go up against five other couples to see which one can lose the highest percentage of body weight in a six month period. The story is told in a series of alternating diary entries, so we get both Zoe and Greg's take on being fat, dieting, exercising, and living in a world that makes fat people feel like pathetic alien creatures in need of extermination.

While there is a lot to laugh at in this novel, I never quite believed these characters and their experiences. Zoe weighs 203 pounds when she begins the weight loss competition, and she wears a size 18. That's large, but not huge, and some of the stories she tells (such as getting literally stuck in a dress she's trying on at a department store) sound like something skinny people think would happen to a woman who wears a size 18. It's the same with Greg - he starts the competition at 282 pounds, which isn't quite large enough to get stuck in a chair so that two men have to wrench the thing from his butt in front of a crowd of party guests. Yes, it's funny (and I did laugh while I was reading it), but it felt a little too much like all the fat jokes you hear and all the fat characters in comedy films that get their laughs by playing on the audience's repulsion for blubber.

What works the best in FAT CHANCE is the way Spalding satirizes weight-loss gimmicks and exercise fads. Zoe and Greg try a number of ridiculous diets (including a gas-inducing cabbage diet and something called the Russian Air Force Diet), all of which are more like intense torture than any form of sensible eating. They also go crazy with exercise, causing no end of grotesquely funny problems as a result. They are forced to run until they literally drop, compete on exercise bikes until their muscles give out, and wear awful t-shirts that say things like "Fat but Fabulous." Zoe is particularly incensed about the t-shirts, since she argues that a person should be able to be "Fat AND Fabulous." She does have a point, but it's not one that gets much play here.

Is it really hysterically funny being overweight in today's world? Maybe. But all the time I was reading this I felt that Spalding has no clue what it's really like to be fat. He portrays Zoe and Greg as a couple whose life has been undermined by their weight gain - she can't get pregnant because she's fat, and they don't have sex very often because they don't have much of a sex drive. As demeaning and insulting as the weight loss competition is (and much of the humor is focused on Zoe and Greg being demeaned and insulted), Spalding goes for an upbeat ending celebrating a new Zoe and Greg. So while they can't exactly be "Fat AND Fabulous," I guess they can be "Thinner and Fabulous."

Honestly, I found FAT CHANCE to be a bit of a grind to get through. And I really thought the story sounded right up my alley. I was overweight for most of my life (much more overweight than Zoe is in this book), and I tried my share of diets and exercise gimmicks. And I wanted to identify with Zoe, who was so irreverent and outrageous and funny, even when people were making her feel so horrible and uncomfortable. But in the end, I do believe a person can be "Fat AND Fabulous," and I don't believe fat women have no sex drive and can't get pregnant (I certainly could!). I did end up losing weight myself (through sensible eating and walking two miles each morning), so I'm not suggesting it doesn't matter how much people weigh. It does matter, but not because you'll look better and can wear a smaller size. I guess I just grew weary of all the fat jokes in this book. But that's what it is - a collection of skits, all of them centered on being fat and ending up the butt of the joke because of it. If you like that sort of thing, you'll like FAT CHANCE more than I did. I grew tired of it fairly quickly.

You might like this if you like the biggest loser.

I suppose it's ok if you enjoy shows like Biggest loser where overweight people are encouraged to embarrass themselves while losing weight. I do not.

I read the other reviews expecting a funny take on the weight loss experience, but it was much sadder than I anticipated.

Zoe and Craig have gained weight - a lot of it. Zoe is asked to be on a radio contest where couples compete for the most weight lost. The prize is 50,000 pounds that is British currency- over $78,000.
One of the challenges for readers who are not familiar with British expressions, is that the story is filled with them. Weight is expressed in stones, which equals 14 pounds. Then there are knickers, buying a jumper, the car's MOS, the heat of 40 degrees- that's centigrade and fancy dress -which we would call a costume party.
There are unpleasant descriptions; soup like bowls of snot, champagne that tastes like horse piss and bodily functions.

What is written especially well is the loving relationship between Craig and Zoe. We read his misadventures with exercise and hers with specific diets. They have their highs and lows.
There are many truths in here and good lessons in weight loss and the expenses of health food and the behavior of those who are overweight.
Most of all it is an engaging and entertaining story about a couple and the adventure of losing weight and their life together.
Those who enjoy realistic stories about couples and also weight loss would like this book.

This is a different and unique beginning to a new series that has history, mystery, suspense, sci-fi, romance, dominance, submission and immortality. They have retained their youth and immortality as The Enlightened, here on earth as guardians. But what happens when Ari starts received emails that hint as to his past and present and threats are being made? Iset is jealous of his required attention to work and Ramsey International and may have put her and him in jeopardy. The plot kept me captivated, going back to 1270 BC and how they met. The dialog is entertaining and keeps the pages turning. This is the first of a series and I look forward to reading more.

Unusual And Fascinating story by Mira Brooks

This was an unusual and unique book. It had sci-fi, historical, romance, and immortality. The only complaint I had was that it ended without warning so I will be anxiously awaiting the next one. The overview coveres what it's about so I won't go into any details except to say it was a page turner and I'm looking forward to reading more

About the Author
Bill Deane was Senior Research Associate at the National Baseball Hall of Fame from 1986 through 1994. He has authored six books on baseball and was managing editor of Total Baseball. Deane won the SABR-Macmillan Baseball Research Award for his book, Award Voting, and in 2003 he won the Utica-Cooperstown SABR chapter’s “Cliff Kachline Award.”

I hope you can handle the truth about baseball

Bill Deane has spent more than two decades digging into baseball history, and this fascinating book is the end result. Tackling nearly 100 myths from the origin of the game, to the development of umpires' signals, to the integration of the major leagues, to the role of the modern bullpen closer, he takes nothing for granted and accepts nothing that cannot be documented. There's something for everyone here--from the casual fan who wonders whether Babe Ruth really did "call his shot" before his famous 1932 World Series home run, to the aficionado who wonders whether it really is more dangerous to slide head-first. Some of Deane's answers are statistical, others anecdotal, some simply a matter of letting us know just because a hundred announcers have told us that a certain event happened, it may not necessarily be true. You will be surprised, entertained, and most of all enlightened about the real history of our favorite sport.

The truth behind baseball myths

Bill Deane explores these questions and more. Deane has a wealth of experience in baseball research, and is gifted at being able to put words to baseball's stories. Here, Deane has done it again in this book that takes the reader to the facts behind many of the game's myths. You will surely enjoy the truth behind many of baseball's famous questions, and you just may find that the Yankees started wearing pin stripes to make Babe Ruth appear thinner!

Great Read!!!!

I almost did not buy this book as there were a couple of reviews that were not very good. However, I am glad I went with my past experience of enjoying this author's books. This was an extremely well-written, hard to put down book. I could not figure out the plot until she started showing who the real antagonists were one by one. The style of the storytelling was very different from the previous book that this was the sequel to.

I am very glad I purchased and read this book.

I usually do not give book reviews, but since this book was not understood or appreciated, I thought I would post my opinion of this book. It was very, very well done.

Excellent read!!

Lisa Jackson has done it again! Although I haven't read the previous book in this series, it didn't detract from a thoroughly suspenseful story that keeps you guessing until the very end. I confess that I did not figure out the mystery on my own. Usually I manage to figure out who the villain or villainess is but I couldn't do it here. With thoughts of the present woven into the account of the past, you're never quite allowed to get your feet under you and figure out who's who and what's really going on. Well deserved kudos go to Jackson for this one.

About the Author

Rob Wilson is Principal Lecturer in Sport Business Management at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. He has delivered sport management-related courses since 2002 and his subject specialisms are financial reporting, management accounting and economic decision making in the sport industry. He is the author of Managing Sport Finance, the co-author of Finance for Sport and Leisure Managers: An introduction and has published a number of chapters in sport management text books. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a recognised expert in learning and teaching in higher education.

Mark Piekarz is Senior Lecturer in Sport Management at the University of Worcester, UK. He has more than 25 years of experience in the sport management and adventure sport sectors.
