About the Author
Keith Oatley is Director of the Cognitive Science Program, University of Toronto. He is the author of more than 130 scholarly articles and seven books, including Emotions: A Brief History (Blackwell, 2004), and two novels.

Dacher Keltner is professor of psychology at University of California at Berkeley, and the author of more than 80 scholarly articles and one book. He received the 2000 Templeton Positive Psychology Prize for Excellence in Research, and two university-wide teaching awards at UC Berkeley.

Jennifer M. Jenkins is Professor in the Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology at the University of Toronto. She is co-editor, with Keith Oatley, of Human Emotions: A Reader (Blackwell, 1998). She now heads a large research project on gene-environment interactions in children.

While it had what I needed, it was very dry for a text. It was useful, but could have included more first hand research and data - I definitely expected more from such a large psych text.

About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861 1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

The third edition continues to use the unique "lecture-book" format of the first two editions with one new chapter, additional sections and clarifications to several chapters, and a revised computer appendix. The Computer Appendix, with step-by-step instructions for using the computer packages STATA, SAS, and SPSS, is expanded to include the software package R.

David Kleinbaum is Professor of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Kleinbaum is internationally known for innovative textbooks and teaching on epidemiological methods, multiple linear regression, logistic regression, and survival analysis. He has provided extensive worldwide short-course training in over 150 short courses on statistical and epidemiological methods. He is also the author of ActivEpi (2002), an interactive computer-based instructional text on fundamentals of epidemiology, which has been used in a variety of educational environments including distance learning.

Great for running stat packages, not for understanding what those packages are doing.

My relatively poor review compared to the others has to do with my expectations. My goal was to learn about survival analysis. I have some knowledge of things like multivariate regression, correlation coefficients, and chi squared analysis. I was hoping to learn about more sophisticated techniques.

Instead, the book teaches how to use 3 or 4 computer programs that do these analyses. There is a difference. For example, Chapter 3 talks about the Cox proportional hazards model. It describes, in great detail, the input data and then shows the output given by one of the computer programs that the book uses. In pointing to one of the numbers from the output file, the authors say that it is "approximately a standard normal or Z variable. This Z statistic is known as a Wald Statistic, which is one of two test statistics typically used with ML estimates. The other test statistic, called the likelihood ratio makes use of the log likelihood statistic. The log likelihood statistic is obtained by multiplying the log likelihood in the computer output by -2. " My problem is that the book hasn't defined what a Z statistic is, or how maximum likelihood estimates are determined, and doesn't describe the significance of a log likelihood statistic. All we get is the formula to multiply one of the output values by -2 to get another value. We get no clue what this factor of -2 means.

For me the bottom line is this. The book is very carefully written so that the reader will be able to run several statistical packages and get output files whose numbers can be understood. If that's what you want, this book is perfection itself. However, if you want to understand what those programs are actually doing, you'll need to go elsewhere.

Very good but not great

This is a very good gentle introduction to survival analysis ... which could be better. Its organization, with one column of text and a column of math/tables/figures on each page, makes it a pleasant read for people who want to learn the material but who do not learn well from math formulas. The column for math includes both straight forward algebra (for the folks who want to see worked problems) as well as fairly advanced formulas (for the others who can read calculus notation). The writing is exceptionally clear and the examples are perfect. The material covered includes the classic methods like Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression as well as more modern techniques like extended Cox with time dependent predictors and Fine and Gray competing risk methods.

The book does have a major flaw. Its coverage of computer software is not good. There is an appendix that covers code but the code is incomplete and was out of date when it was published. There are many graphics and analyses in the body of the book that are not covered in the appendix. I teach with SAS so I can see many places where the authors failed to take advantage of methods that were in place when the book came out and their is no attempt to update the website to point out where the book is now badly out of date. For example the book clearly states that Fine and Gray analysis can't be done with off the shelf software (and SAS has been doing it since around 2013).

So, this is a very good book that could be great if the authors would update it (or the website) to include the code to do all the graphics/analysis using modern software.

Survival Analysis: A Self-Learning Text

I used this book along with an online course on the same topic by Statistics.com. The book is extremely user friendly, my background being that of a physician with knowledge of basic stats and regression analysis, not a background of mathematics or advanced statistics. Plus having worked out examples in the text using codes covering most of the commonly used stats program made it appropriate for a hands-on learning format that I prefer. Thus, it makes one confident to apply the techniques in future projects involving survival analysis.

So basically, if you're a "newbie" (i detest the word...its very negative and snooty) to Nirvana and just want the inside story without really wading through all the websites and detailed books (not to mention "die-hard" fans mocking you for not knowing the story behind "Teen Spirit"), then this book is for you. The basic story is there, told with a sort of fairy-tale wonder. Great pictures too. There are some nice excerpts from interviews, but they are pretty contradictory in the profile they construct. But overal, a very good primer for the uninitiated. Don't be ashamed for not knowing much, we all have to start somewhere. Go entertain yourselves.

I read and really enjoyed the first book in this series, but I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days.

This book is about Lucas' sister Evelyn and a blacksmith named Alec. Evelyn has eloped to Gretna Green in Scotland with a man named Stephen Crawford. Her brother does not approve of Stephen and forbid them to marry - hence the trip to Scotland. Once they arrive, Stephen goes to secure a room at the inn and Evelyn goes in search of a blacksmith. She finds Alec when the first blacksmith was too busy. Alec at first refuses to marry them - but then after demanding a kiss, agrees. Just as the ceremony begins, Evelyn's friend Gwen shows up with Matthias (her brothers friend) and her maid in tow. They stop the wedding and the ladies retire to the inn and proceed to drink themselves stupid.

Alec comes to the inn and is confronted by Evelyn - who is trashed. They end up spending the night together and wake up naked, chained together and married. It is never really explained what happened and when they are woken up, they find out that Stephen and Emily (the maid) have disappeared - apparently Stephen was shot and was taken by Emily to the hospital in Glasgow.

Evelyn decides that she must follow him there and Alec agrees to take her. From here the story takes a nose dive in my opinion. Evelyn says she grew up in poverty before her brother became a duke - but she acts like she has been pampered her entire life. Alec also presents with a lot of contradictions - a lot of things are hinted about him, but there is no follow through.

I have no idea when or why these two fell in love - but apparently they did.

The story ends with a HEA and sets up possibly two future stories.

Bottom line - the first book was great - this one was OK but frustrating to read. There is a lot of modern verbiage (which doesn't really bother me - but I know it irks some readers) there are also some totally over the top unbelievable events - to really enjoy the book, you will have to let go of reality as you know it. I wouldn't go as far as to say pass on this book, but I would caution readers that it is not a traditional regency.

Not my type of book

The author of this book makes the same mistakes that many other authors make - putting today's morals and social habits into a historical romance. For one thing, I just can't imagine a proper english lady of that time, sister to a duke, eloping to Scotland to get married at a blacksmith shop. One blacksmith shop is busy, and at the other, the smith demands a kiss as payment to marry them. Only a man of low morals and character would do such. Moreover, a lady wouldn't have went off alone to find someplace to get married while her beau took care of the luggage and carriage and such.

When her marriage plans are foiled by friends of her and her brother, she and her friend end up in a common tavern at a table, drinking. Also not something a lady would have done. Then she ends up mysteriously married to the 2nd blacksmith, and the rest of the book is more a chronicle of lust than love or romance.

This reads more like erotica than historical romance. As historical romance, it fails completely. Also, the editing leaves something to be desired. I am being generous in giving it 3 stars.

Love these highlanders!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Lady Evelyn has decided that since her brother has settled and married, it is time for her to do so.. She wants to marry Stephen but her brother has refused, so Evelyn and he decide to elope and marry in Gretna Green'

When they arrive, the blacksmith has a long line of people waiting to marry so she asks if there is another and is directed to him. Alec is that blacksmith. Evelyn takes one look at him and thinks he is simply beautiful but then reminds herself she is here to marry.

Alec then tells her he will marry her to Stephen for one kiss as he is also very attracted to her. She offers him money and he just laughs at her. And then he kisses her......and both their worlds change.

Stephen arrives and Evelyn tells him that Alec will marry them. Alec asks Evelyn 'if she still wanted to marry" Stephen and he takes some offense to this as Evelyn is still thinking about the kiss. Alec starts performing the ceremony and it is interrupted by Matthias and Gwen, her brothers best friend and her best friend.

Matthias tells her that the housekeeper found the note and called him as her brother wasn't there. He sent word to Lucas and went to stop her. Matthias and Stephen are close to having a physical fight and Evelyn gets mad and she and Gwen go back to town.

Nothing is working out as Evelyn has planned. She and Gwen manage to get stinking drunk when she sees Alec watching her. She and Alec have a few words and Gwen comes over and grabs her to dance. At one point another man attempts to kiss her and Alec interrupts. He then decides she has had enough to drink and takes her to her room and puts her to bed. They talk and drink for a bit, she asks him to lay with her.....

When she wakes the next day she has a hurting head, is shackled by the ankle and is married....to the highlander.

What will happen to Evelyn and Alec? What of Stephen?And brother Lucas' arrival?

The feelings between Alec and Evelyn are pretty intense. I think it is worse for Alec, as he is much more experienced that this woman would make him feel this way. Neither of them are the helpless type and are strong willed.

Evelyn and Alec come from different classes. She is the sister of a duke and he a highlander. Lucas wants his sister to marry a man who is equal to her in status as was the custom at the time. Alec had no real family, a step-father and a couple of brothers he didn't really get along with. Apparently his father is an English Lord who left his mother pregnant.

I see more great characters for Kate to delve into. Matthias & Gwen. Stephen & his lady love and I would love to see more of Evelyn & Alec. Alec makes his living but is not close to what Evelyn is used to, it would be great to see his real father come into his life.

I did enjoy this book and I would recommend it!

About the Author
Frantz Fanon (1925 - 1961) was an author, psychoanalyst, and revolutionary from Martinique. He was the pre-eminent thinker of the 20th century on the issue of decolonisation and the psychopathology of colonisation, and his works have inspired anti-colonial liberation movements for over half a century. He is also the author of the classic The Wretched of the Earth.

Frantz Fanon was a black man born in the French colony and island of Martinique. He trained as a doctor specialising in psychiatry. He was deeply concerned about the impact of colonialism on the people of colour, particularly how it humiliated them, destroyed their culture, values and dignity. This led him to get involved in the Algerian war of independence in the 1950s.

The book "Black Skin, White Masks" was written almost fifty years ago. This was during the time when decolonisation of the African continent and elsewhere was gathering momentum.

To adequately capture and assimilate Fanon's thinking of the question of colonialism and racism and their impact on the coloured people, one also needs to read Fanon's other great works: "The Wretched of the Earth" and "Dying Colonialism". Here one can see his anger and the background to his conclusion that it was only through violence that people of colour could liberate themselves from colonialism, particularly from mental bondage and inferiority complex that accompanied colonial subjugation.

In "Black Skin, White Masks", Fanon develops his thesis about the impact of inferiority complex of subjugated peoples and the alienation of some of them from their kind resulting in their wish to identified with the colonialists or imitate the European. There are a number of celebrated and classic cases of coloured people who have tried various formulas to change the colour of their skins, the tone of their voices or their names so that they sound more civilised (European).

Fanon's ideas about how the coloured people can liberate themselves (physically and mentally) influenced many leaders of revolutionary movements that were fighting colonialism. Some organisations in the USA, such as the Nation of Islam, appear to embrace a lot of Fanon's ideas and thinking.

Useful introductory book to PhysX

The new generation of high-definition, ultra-realistic video games has made a substantial impact on society. Probably, a good reason for this is that new CUDA GPUs technology allows program developers to recreate extremely vivid and realistic environments, capable of immersing the player in an alternate universe. There, telling the difference between the game and the real world becomes very difficult. This video game realism is the result of 'physics engines,' the computer software that delivers nearly accurate simulations of physical phenomena. Learning Physics Modeling with PhysX introduces the reader to the powerful physics engine PhysX. This engine is capable of simulating a variety of physical systems, such as rigid and soft body dynamics with constraints, fluid dynamics, collisions, particles, and so.

Author Krishna Kumar begins with a brief description of PhysX3 new features and gives some tips for installing the SDK and some other necessary tools, such as Visual C++ Express. Then, some fundamental concepts like initializing PhysX, creating shapes, simulating, and shutting down the engine are explained. The author covers concisely the most important aspects of physics engines, which are rigid body dynamics, collision detection, joints, scene queries, character controller, particles, and cloth. For each one of these topics a piece of code is given that simulates, in the simplest way, the particular physical phenomenon. Most important, he points out straightforwardly what objects and methods are required for each particular simulation.

Learning Physics Modeling with PhysX ([...]) is useful for aspiring game developers and those who want to learn a bit about physics engines. Even though the author does not go in-depth with physics concepts, the general idea of how to use physics engines (PhysX) to do actual physics simulations can be grasped. Hence, the book can also be a good starting point for those computer scientists who want to make their physics simulations more realistic and appealing.

Short and sweet

This books has pros and cons. Overall, I felt it was a pretty simple introduction to PhysX.

pros:
+It's short. You could read a couple of chapters in a single sitting.
+You can get up and running quickly with PhysX.
+It has easy to understand examples.
+It covers the visual debugging tool.

cons:
-Some errors in the book, but nothing to detract from it's usability.
-Some parts of the book, I felt, could use more explanation. But this would make the book larger, so it's a trade off.
-The samples could be way better, but they're easy to mess with. I would rather have seen more complicated samples and just more of them.
-Some of the flags, I felt, weren't really described very well, or at all. For example, I literally saw something like this: "eENABLE_TWO_WAY_CONTACTS - This flag enables two way contacts". Okay. Thanks. That didn't tell me anything. But that was only one time.

Overall, if I wanted to learn PhysX, which I did, I would recommend this book. I never looked at the PhysX documentation or tutorials, so I can't compare this book with the official documentation. You won't be a master at PhysX after reading this book, but it definitely gives you a nice jumping off point.
